As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of cinema, I must admit that the revelation of the connection between The Batman and The Room left me utterly astounded. It’s like discovering that Beethoven composed a symphony using only a kazoo! Yet, in this seemingly unlikely union lies a testament to the boundless creativity and inspiration that can be found even in the most unexpected corners of our cinematic universe.

Supporters of “The Batman” will find it hard to believe that one scene in the 2022 reemergence of the Dark Knight was influenced by one of the poorest films in contemporary cinema, Tommy Wiseau’s “The Room”. Despite its status as a massive box office hit generating over $772 million and introducing a grittier, more realistic portrayal of Bruce Wayne than ever before, this film surprisingly borrowed its visual style for a Gotham City skyline scene from Wiseau’s infamous flop, as revealed by the VFX artist involved in its production.

On Twitter post by Miguel Santana da Silva, he posted an image from the 2003 film “The Room” in reply to another user’s comment about the impressive visuals in “The Batman”, specifically mentioning a shot of Robert Pattinson as Batman gazing over the city skyline. In his message, da Silva remarked:

It’s worth noting that while designing the sunset scene for Gotham, I drew a little inspiration from the rooftop matte painting in “The Room”. Surprisingly, it carries a stronger aesthetic impact than one might expect.

Audience members found it hard to imagine that “The Batman” and “The Room” could be connected, let alone suggest that one might have been impacted by the other. However minor the connection between these two films may seem in a broader context, it’s an intriguing tidbit of information that not many were aware of until recently.

The Room is Regarded as a Terrible Movie – but is Still Getting a Remake

Over the past two decades, Tommy Wiseau’s movie, The Room, has earned a unique level of infamy among many films considered poorly made. Some have even dubbed it a “trash masterpiece.” Interestingly enough, this film is now being remade with Bob Odenkirk set to star. The new version, titled The Room Returns!, was filmed in just one day back in January 2023. Initially, there were plans for a digital release soon after filming, but updates on the remake went silent until May this year.

In a question-and-answer session, Greg Sestero, who played key roles in both the original film and its remake, disclosed that post-production work on the movie was still ongoing and was expected to be wrapped up very soon. However, it remains unclear when the movie will hit theaters, as there have been no recent announcements regarding the film’s progress since three months ago.

Joining Odenkirk and Sestero, “The Room Returns!” also stars Bella Heathcote, Brando Crawford, Kate Siegel, Mike Flanagan, Cameron Kasky, and Arturo Castro. The film is expected to continue the story of the original, delving into the lives of banker Johnny, his fiancée, and his best friend, as they become enmeshed in a web of love, deceit, and betrayal.

Though no specific launch date has been announced for “The Room Returns!“, enthusiasts can revisit the universe of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” this coming Fall. Beginning September 19 on Max, “The Penguin” will air to further unfold Colin Farrell’s character, Oswald Cobb, as he seeks control over Gotham City’s streets. This television series will serve as a precursor to the sequel of “The Batman“, slated for cinema release on October 2, 2026.
