ICYMI: Ridley Scott Surprise Drops 3.5 Hour ‘Napoleon’ Director’s Cut

As a cinephile with a soft spot for epic historical dramas and the works of Ridley Scott, I’m absolutely thrilled about Napoleon: The Director’s Cut gracing our screens (or rather, our devices) on Apple TV+. Having had the privilege of watching the original 157-minute version, I can only imagine what an additional 48 minutes could bring to the table in terms of depth and complexity.

The epic movie about Napoleon, directed by Ridley Scott and featuring Joaquin Phoenix, has been extended. An extra 48 minutes of never-before-seen footage have been added, making the movie a whopping 3 hours and 30 minutes long, specifically 205 minutes in total. For reference, the initial theater release ran for 157 minutes.

Introducing the Director’s Cut of Napoleon on Apple TV+, Scott shared his excitement in a recent trailer titled “Director’s Corner”. He said, “Greetings, internet folks! I am delighted to reveal that the expanded version of Napoleon: The Director’s Cut is now exclusively streaming on Apple TV+. Enjoy the freshly included scenes that broaden the canvas of this grand production. Don’t miss it!” In a playful manner, Scott concluded, “Can’t get better than this for me.” It’s worth mentioning that the version available on Apple TV+ might be shorter than what Scott originally planned. Previously, he had shared with Total Film that his personal edit of the film ran for 250 minutes, which is equivalent to 4 hours and 10 minutes.

1. In this movie, Phoenix portrays Napoleon Bonaparte, the famous French emperor, while Vanessa Kirby plays his wife Josephine. The story delves into their strained marriage and Napoleon’s military campaigns. With three Oscar nominations, it’s no surprise that this film is directed by Ridley Scott, who often releases extended versions of his films. Among all his movies, Napoleon: The Director’s Cut stands as the longest one in his collection.
