As a seasoned Porsche enthusiast and collector with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the upcoming auction of “The Last Waltz” at Goodwood Revival has sent a shiver down my spine. This 1998 Porsche 911 Type 993 Turbo Coupé is not just another vintage car; it’s a piece of automotive history, the last air-cooled 911 to roll off the production line.

Bonhams is all set to sell an exceptionally rare piece of automotive heritage: a 1998 Porsche 911 Type 993 Turbo Coupe, fondly known as “The Last Waltz.” This vehicle occupies a significant spot in Porsche’s history, being the last air-cooled 911 rolled out from the Zuffenhausen factory during its initial production phase.

At the request of German author Clauss Vanderborg, this Porsche was custom-made according to his unique requirements by Porsche’s Special Wishes division. The exterior color is Ocean Blue, and it boasts a 443 hp engine, similar to the Turbo S, along with numerous personalized details. Notably, the interior is fully upholstered in Night Blue leather. Vanderborg, who was acquainted with Ferry Porsche, named this car in honor of the company’s founder, and a plaque on the dashboard carries an inscription commemorating him.

On March 27, 1998, which happened to be the same day Ferry Porsche passed away, the car known as “The Last Waltz” signified the conclusion of an era for Porsche fans. Interestingly, this vehicle was completed just before Jerry Seinfeld’s Mexico Blue Carrera 4S; however, “The Last Waltz” stayed at the factory for six more months to undergo customization. As a result, it became the last customer car in the air-cooled 911 series lineage.

As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that this extraordinary Porsche, boasting over 11,000 kilometers on its odometer, has been meticulously preserved and cherished by collectors across Japan, Belgium, and the UK. Its unique historical value, coupled with its immaculate condition, places it among the most sought-after Porsches ever to be put up for auction. The vehicle comes accompanied by an authentic letter from Porsche, confirming it as the last air-cooled 911 ever produced.

Appropriately timed, this notable auction scheduled for the Goodwood Revival this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 Turbo. The bidding starts on September 7 at Goodwood, Chichester, with estimates reaching up to £800,000 GBP, roughly equivalent to $1,050,000 USD.
