James Gunn Addresses Rumor Chris Pratt Is Joining DCU

As a cinephile with a rich life experience, I eagerly await James Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe projects, especially after his successful run with Chris Pratt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While Gunn hasn’t confirmed if Pratt will join the DC Universe, they have become good friends and often discuss possibilities.

James Gunn has collaborated with some of his preferred actors/friends for his upcoming DC Universe productions, yet fans are still curious if the director will reunite with Chris Pratt in the new DCU. Prior to assuming the role of co-president of DC’s film and television division (alongside Peter Safran), Gunn directed one of the most successful trilogies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Starring Chris Pratt as Star Lord, the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy transformed an unheard-of comic book team into a billion-dollar franchise. The conclusion of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hinted at Star Lord’s return once more in the MCU, but fans hope Pratt will transition to the DC Universe.

Constantly active on social media, James Gunn frequently engages with fans regarding the upcoming DC Universe projects by addressing their queries through Threads. One inquisitive fan inquired if the speculations about Chris Pratt joining the DCU were indeed accurate. While Gunn didn’t explicitly confirm Pratt’s involvement or the specific character/project he might be associated with, he did mention that they often discuss Pratt’s potential role in the DC Universe due to their close friendship, having worked together on three films (and a Holiday Special).

“He’s a close friend. We talk about that all the time.”

Where Could Chris Pratt Appear in the DC Universe?

Even before the DC Universe officially launches, fans are eagerly speculating about their ideal cast choices for upcoming projects. The reimagined cinematic universe officially commences later this year with the animated series “Creature Commandos”. However, viewers won’t get to see the first movie of the new DCU until mid-2025, titled “Superman” and directed by James Gunn. As soon as it was announced that James Gunn would co-lead the rejuvenated DC Universe, fans started recasting the stars of “Guardians of the Galaxy” as DC Comics characters. Actors like Dave Bautista found this an easy task, with many suggesting him for roles such as Bane or Solomon Grundy. However, deciding on which character Chris Pratt could portray has proven to be a more challenging task.

Following the recent rumor that Josh Brolin has been offered the role of Hal Jordan in the Lanterns series, some fans disagreed with the choice, believing that Chris Pratt would be a better fit for the character. Alternative fan castings have imagined Pratt as the Robin Hood-esque hero of Star City, the Green Arrow, a.k.a. Oliver Queen. One of the most popular fan castings sees Chris Pratt play the time-traveling hero Booster Gold — who will be getting his own movie in the DCU. Earlier this year, Pratt addressed the potential of appearing again as Star Lord in the MCU, and joining James Gunn’s DCU. While it is more likely that the actor will reprise his MCU role, Pratt holds out hope for a spot among the new DC roster. He said:

“Given the circumstances, it seems likely that I might reprise my role as Star-Lord again. However, anything can happen in this industry, especially with James working at DC. It could be that something suitable arises there. Or perhaps here and there. Why not explore both possibilities? I believe it’s entirely feasible to do both roles.”
