Malala Yousafzai Makes Film Producer Debut With ‘Last of the Sea Women’ Trailer

As a longtime admirer of Malala Yousafzai and her relentless pursuit of justice and equality, I am absolutely thrilled to see her expanding her horizons yet again. The trailer for “Last of the Sea Women” is nothing short of captivating, highlighting the incredible resilience and dedication of these Korean divers who are not just warriors of the sea but also guardians of our planet.

7-year-old Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, who earned the distinction of being the youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient in 2014, has embarked on her film producing career with the release of a trailer for “Last of the Sea Women” on Apple TV+. This was made public on Thursday

The documentary by director Sue Kim and A24 showcases Korean women known as “haenyeo” divers, who plunge into the ocean depths without oxygen to gather seafood. These remarkable women are currently fighting against marine perils. One of the divers explains in the trailer’s voiceover, “We are the guardians of the sea and we have safeguarded the ocean for centuries.”

As a passionate admirer, I find myself deeply moved by the remarkable dedication shown by many Korean divers who are still actively working well into their 60s, 70s, and even 80s, braving immediate danger every day. The compelling narrative of these unsung heroes is beautifully brought to life through The Last of the Sea Women, a production spearheaded by Yousafzai under her production banner Extracurricular Productions. This esteemed figure continues to carve out a significant niche for herself in Hollywood, using her platform to tell inspiring stories like this one

In addition to Kim and Erika Kennair, Nicole Stott, Emily Osborne, Harry Go, and Marissa Torres Ericson serve as executive producers for the upcoming film titled The Last of the Sea Women. This captivating production will have its world premiere on September 8, with a global release on Apple TV+ scheduled for October

Malala Yousafzai made her acting debut in the second season of “We Are Lady Parts,” which aired on Peacock in the U.S. and Channel Four in the U.K. Additionally, she has used her influence as an executive producer for various projects, one of them being “Stranger at the Gate,” a 2023 Oscar-nominated film directed by Joshua Seftel. This movie tells the story of a former U.S. Marine suffering from PTSD, who had initially planned to bomb a mosque in Indiana. However, during his visit to the mosque, he was moved by its congregants and ultimately changed his mind
