Every DC Live-Action Show Available on Netflix

As someone who’s spent years immersed in the vibrant world of comic books and superheroes, I must say that these shows have left quite an impact on me. Each one offers a unique perspective on what it means to be a hero, whether it’s saving a city, traveling through time, or solving supernatural mysteries from beyond the grave.

For several years now, Max has been the preferred streaming service for fans of DC Comics. Since it is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), which also controls DC Entertainment, there’s a family dynamic that requires the characters to collaborate, whether they click or not. Regrettably, the fierce competition among streaming platforms has caused viewers frustration due to the financial strain of subscribing to multiple services. As per Forbes, Netflix continues to lead the pack with 247 million users as of August 2024, while Max ranks fourth with approximately 95 million users.

Well, there is some good news for Netflix subscribers who are DC fans. The platform still has a few DC shows available, and they aren’t leaving any time soon. But why is there DC content on Netflix? According to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, this isn’t one of those Marvel-Fox ‘rights wars.’ The company is opening to license its content because people who watch DC productions elsewhere end up coming to Max for more.

Here’s what’s currently available on Netflix and whether you hop on to Max later is up to you.

9 Titans (2018 – 2023)

Titans is a story that subtly depicts a band of secondary DC characters joining forces to combat evil. Initially led by Dick Grayson, formerly known as Batman’s sidekick, he seeks independence and wants to establish his own identity beyond the Caped Crusader’s shadow. As the narrative unfolds, Dick transforms from Robin to Nightwing. Similarly, other Titans undergo personal and professional changes influenced by the challenges they encounter. The threats also become increasingly personal, leaving uncertainty about who will survive in the end.

It would have been heartbreaking when Titans concluded after just four seasons, as there’s no other series quite like it. The show offers a vividly imaginative landscape, seamlessly combining action, humor, and striking costumes that make it an engaging watch for comic book enthusiasts.

Approaching larger DC characters like Batman with a hint of action but avoiding detailed close-ups in Season 1 might initially seem unusual, but once acclimated, viewers will be thrilled by the content. Dick Grayson emerges as the leading character, and Brenton Thwaites’ performance demonstrates his talent beyond what we knew from Home and Away. However, it’s important to note that this is a joint effort where every team member plays a crucial role.

8 Black Lightning (2018 – 2021)

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve grown fond of Jefferson Pierce, the charismatic principal at Garfield High School who stands against the wicked and corrupt. To my fellow community members and students, he’s a beloved populist icon. Little do they know that beneath his schoolmaster persona lies the masked crusader known as Black Lightning. My main adversary is Tobias Whale, a tyrant who controls the city’s underworld through his ruthless gang, The 100. He swiftly eliminates anyone who dares defy him. Fortunately, his reign of terror starts to unravel in the later seasons of Black Lightning, offering some semblance of hope for justice and peace in our city.

Using the Superhero Genre to Tackle Race and Politics

In a unique and powerful way, the undervalued superhero character Black Lightning, created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden, delivers a hard-hitting depiction of drug abuse, racial disparity, corruption, and misuse of power. This makes it one of the most gripping series about urban life within the DC Universe. Marvin “Krondon” Jones III does an exceptional job as the antagonist Tobias Whale, and it’s exciting to imagine him delivering the intense, high-stakes performance he showcased here on the big screen someday. With its impressive visual effects and timely themes, the series is likely to stay relevant for a considerable time.

7 The Sandman (2022)

The Sandman is primarily about Morpheus, aka, Dream, the personification of dreams and nightmares and one of the seven cosmic beings known as the Endless (Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destiny, Destruction, and Dream). The show trails his activities after he breaks free from a 106-year captivity stint, having been captured via an occult ritual in 1916. As he tries to restore order in his realm, the Dreaming, he interacts with multiple strident, weird, and fascinating characters.

I’ve been utterly captivated by “The Sandman,” a masterpiece exclusively crafted for Netflix that swiftly soared to the summit of the platform’s viewership charts upon its release, maintaining its position for several weeks. The remarkable visual effects work makes it an absolute joy for all viewers, regardless of the subject matter. Its intricate storylines keep me on my toes, sparking my curiosity at every turn. While it occasionally deviates from the original comics in certain aspects, its unique circus-like atmosphere and a diverse array of captivating characters, both human and supernatural, make it a truly outstanding addition to the DC universe.

6 The Flash (2014 – 2023)

Originating from the initial series of the Arrowverse, Arrow, The Flash is the story about Barry Allen (played by Grant Gustin), a brave assistant police forensic investigator in Central City. His character obtains super speed after being struck by lightning and surviving an explosion at the S.T.A.R. Labs particle accelerator. Now known as The Flash, he uses his powers to investigate suspicious characters and crimes, always pursuing leads that take him to the shadiest parts of the city in search of answers.

Grant Gustin Owns the Role

Similar to its main character, The Flash is swift-moving, which makes it more captivating than its predecessor series. Starting from the very first episode, there’s an instant sense of urgency that keeps viewers engaged. Moreover, the narrative unfolds with a series of compelling plotlines that keep audiences glued to their screens. Grant Gustin, in particular, delivers a riveting portrayal. While other actors may strive for perfection, Gustin embodies the Scarlet Speedster as profoundly as Hugh Jackman is synonymous with Wolverine or Robert Downey Jr. is with Iron Man. His name will forever be associated with this iconic character.

5 Lucifer (2016 – 2021)

Intricacies are where the devil lies, and it seems Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) has a knack for uncovering those subtle hints in the series Lucifer. This portrayal of God’s arch-nemesis works as an advisor to the LAPD. So, how did he end up there? Well, he grew tired of hell, calling it mundane, and then started managing a nightclub instead. From there, events unfolded, leading him to assist in apprehending criminals, which is ironic given his role as the provider of sin.

The Devil Is Friendlier Here

If you’re looking for a captivating DC series that delves into the mind of a witty and mischievous character while avoiding comic book connections, I recommend checking out Lucifer. Crafted by Tom Kapinos (famous for Californication), this series is engaging and less scary than one might expect. The vibrant, fantastical drama, loosely based on Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, masterfully explores themes of love, acceptance, and desire as we follow a Lucifer who is struggling with the repercussions of his conflict with God. He seems to have found a sense of belonging on Earth, which might just be for the best for all involved.

4 iZombie (2015 – 2019)

In the TV series ‘iZombie’, the character Liv Moore, a Seattle medical resident, inexplicably becomes a zombie during a boat party. Feeling disheartened, she leaves behind her career and her fiancé. However, she soon discovers that to avoid becoming a mindless, violent zombie, she needs to consume brains regularly. To avoid harming innocent people, Liv instead finds employment at a morgue where she eats the brains of deceased individuals following autopsies.

Zombies Were Never This Fun

iZombie truly deserves all the accolades for revitalizing the often stale undead genre with its unique approach. The main character, a clever zombie, demonstrates responsibility in using her abilities and maintains a comical charm that mirrors her comic book counterpart. Additionally, there’s an element of creativity at play here; the show presents an unusual scenario where zombies meticulously prepare brain-meat as if they were master chefs, and they contribute to the tanning industry by consistently purchasing products. All in all, it’s a delightful series that’s definitely worth watching.

3 Supergirl (2015 – 2021)

Kara Zor-El, also known as Kara Denvers and more famously recognized as Supergirl, spends her days working as a journalist, much like her cousin Clark Kent, while simultaneously safeguarding National City. Originally intended to shield her infant cousin Kal-El, who would eventually become Superman, she was the first of her kind to land on Earth; however, her spaceship veered off course before Kal-El’s arrival.

One of the Most Progressive DC Productions

The series boasts elements that will captivate lovers of Superman lore. It offers thrilling action and formidable adversaries, such as Lex Luthor. Crucially, it’s a forward-thinking production. During Kara’s tenure at CatCo, Supergirl repeatedly underscores the significance of professional advancement for women in the corporate world. The character is less objectified compared to her previous portrayals.

2 Legends of Tomorrow (2016 – 2022)

In the series called “Legends of Tomorrow,” we delve into the long-standing feud between Time Master Rip Hunter and the ruthless immortal villain Vandal Savage. Infuriated by each other’s meddling with history, the Time Masters, in cahoots with Savage, devise a seemingly impenetrable plan to bring down our hero. Fortunately, he can count on a formidable squad consisting of The Atom, White Canary, Martin Stein, Firestorm, Hawkgirl, Hawkman, Captain Cold, and Heat Wave.

Playing with Time

An exceptionally well-performed, thrill-filled tale centering around envy and striving for excellence, “Legends of Tomorrow” is a significant achievement that will captivate fans of genre stories with a penchant for time-travel plots. This series skillfully combines witty humor, tension-filled drama, and social insights to produce an outstanding superhero production. The entire supporting cast brings their characters to life with enthusiasm, with Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell displaying excellent dynamics due to years of camaraderie fostered on the “Prison Break” set.

1 Dead Boy Detectives (2024)

In the same storyline as The Sandman, Dead Boy Detectives focuses on the ghostly duo of Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, who run a supernatural detective agency from beyond the grave. Being as obstinate as most teenagers, they opted against entering the afterlife following their deaths, believing they could make a greater impact in the world of the living. Despite facing numerous difficulties, they maintain their wit and unwavering ambition to create a better world.

A Dynamic Duo That Should Have Stuck Around Longer

As a die-hard fan of television, I must confess that my admiration for Steve Yockey’s work has always been evident. Having penned episodes for the iconic series ‘Supernatural’, it’s clear he’s brought some of his old writing tools and know-how to this new project. Yet, what sets this story apart is its unsentimental approach. Unlike other tales, this one doesn’t shy away from the gritty reality of the duo’s pursuits. They’re not afraid to show the darker side of chasing their private investigator dreams, and that raw authenticity is truly captivating.

Although Dead Boy Detectives received praise from critics, it failed to capture the hearts of fans and Netflix executives, leading to its cancellation. This could partially be due to the absence of big-name stars (the main actors don’t currently have Wikipedia entries), but there is still potential in this series, so take advantage of this opportunity to reevaluate a DC gem that has been overlooked.
