Marlon Wayans Says Harvey Weinstein’s Demise Felt Like “God’s Revenge” After ‘Scary Movie’ Fallout

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more than a few movies in his time, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy for Marlon Wayans. The man’s been through the ringer with Harvey Weinstein, and it seems like Hollywood’s resident monster stole more than just their film ideas.

Marlon Wayans expressed regret over not taking legal action against Harvey Weinstein for allegedly stealing his family’s movie concepts, particularly the Scary Movie franchise, and instead viewed Weinstein’s downfall as “divine retribution.”

The movie “Scary Movie” originated as a 2000 comedy-horror production, penned by the Wayans brothers, including Shawn and Keenan, who also directed it. Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax was responsible for its production. This film gave birth to four subsequent movies in the series.

In an interview on “Club Shay Shay” on Wednesday, Wayans stated that Miramax offered a poor deal for the initial movie, which eventually strained their relationship as the sequels unfolded; by the time of “Scary Movie 3”, Miramax had secretly hired the Zucker brothers to direct the film, using ideas originating from the Wayans brothers. On Wednesday, Wayans revealed this was done without their consent.

“We continued, earning profits. ‘White Chicks’ and ‘Little Man’ both produced more timeless films. According to Wayans, we carry on with our unique style. However, he mentioned that they should have taken legal action against Weinstein and his company for allegedly stealing their ideas.”

The films “Scary Movie 4” and “Scary Movie 5”, produced without the Wayans family’s participation, were the poorest performing in the series. As Marlon Wayans stated, “You can’t replicate the Wayans’ brand of humor without us.” While others might attempt it, they will inevitably lose a significant amount of money because our style is unique. We have over 200 years of comedy experience among me, Shawn, Keenan, Damon, and Kim. Our collective excellence in what we do can’t be easily replicated by just anyone.

Wayans expressed that the downfall of Harvey Weinstein, who was convicted on multiple counts of rape and sexual assault in 2020 and whose case played a significant role in igniting the #MeToo movement, seemed like divine retribution to him.

Occasionally, it’s not necessary to act because God will handle everything – that’s His justice at work, Wayans stated. When God calls you, trust in Him. Don’t seek revenge, for vengeance belongs to Him alone. They seized his company, Miramax, and then they took the Weinstein Company as well. Afterwards, a series of sexual assault allegations emerged, and that company was taken away too.

He commented, “I often remark that not only did they violate and abuse women, but they also victimized Black people. They committed such acts in various ways. They were truly reprehensible individuals.”
