Sonic the Hedgehog Speeds Up the Netflix Movie Chart Ahead of Sequel

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the cinematic universe, I must say that the resurgence of Sonic the Hedgehog on Netflix is a delightful surprise. Having grown up with the video game icon, I can attest to the fact that this live-action adaptation is a breath of fresh air in the realm of video game movie adaptations (which admittedly isn’t saying much).

The upcoming third installment of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” series in live-action will be released later this year, yet you can currently stream the first film on Netflix. Known as one of the better movie adaptations from video games (setting a low bar to beat, it’s fair to say), Sonic broke box office records during its cinema release. Now, Sonic is nearing the top of Netflix’s streaming charts in North America, and it seems like this is an ideal moment for it to do so.

2020 marked the release of “Sonic the Hedgehog,” where Ben Schwartz, famously known for his role in “Parks & Recreation,” voices the lead character. James Marsden, recognized for his roles in “Westworld” and “X-Men,” plays a fatherly role to Sonic as Tom Wachowski. Interestingly, Jim Carrey, who’s currently focusing on the “Sonic” films, portrays Dr. Robotnik (also known as Eggman), the main antagonist of the franchise. This adaptation, surprisingly close to the original, isn’t always what we’ve come to expect, and it’s holding strong at #3 in Netflix’s most-watched list across North America.

Sonic the Hedgehog is Worth a Watch

Beyond its sequel success, there are numerous convincing reasons why Sonic the Hedgehog has become a popular choice on Netflix’s streaming platform. When the movie was initially announced, many fans had reservations about an Earth-bound Sonic adaptation featuring a human co-star. However, the final product delivered an enjoyable and heartwarming experience that surpassed expectations. Each cast member delivers a commendable performance, but Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik steals every scene with his remarkable portrayal. Although primarily aimed at younger audiences and long-time fans, most viewers can find enjoyment in the film and leave feeling content.

The Sonic movie series has a knack for attracting big-name stars for its films, with the child-friendly movies initially landing Jim Carrey as the lead actor who fully immersed himself into the role and is now slated to appear in all three films. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Idris Elba was brought onboard to voice Knuckles, a character who transitions from antagonist to hero in the movie and its sequel, and even has his own spin-off series. Coming up next, Keanu Reeves will voice Shadow the Hedgehog, a much-anticipated anti-hero who plays a significant role in the franchise. This is quite remarkable given that he’s declined roles in Marvel and Star Wars projects in the past.

Currently, Sonic the Hedgehog can be streamed on Netflix, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled for a cinema release on December 20th.
