Fantasy Series A Discovery of Witches Finds New Life On Netflix

As a long-time fan of supernatural fiction, I must say that stumbling upon “A Discovery of Witches” on Netflix six years after its original release has felt like finding a hidden treasure. Having read Deborah Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy and being captivated by the intricate world she’s created, seeing it brought to life on screen has been a delightful experience.

Six years after its initial release, the British fantasy drama “A Discovery of Witches” is gaining a fresh following on Netflix. The series, which was based on Deborah Harkness’ “All Souls” Trilogy, found its way onto the U.S.’s most-watched Netflix list due to a streaming deal with AMC in North America that brought several shows onto their platform. In this captivating series, Teresa Palmer plays Diana Bishop, a resistant witch who must confront her magical destiny, while Matthew Goode portrays her mentor, the vampire Matthew Clairmont.

The show “A Discovery of Witches” initially aired on Sky in 2018, and later in the U.S. through AMC network. The series garnered favorable reviews during its run, gradually amassing a loyal fanbase without quite breaking into the mainstream. As of now, it consists of three seasons and boasts an impressive 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, this series has managed to keep its audience engaged even after wrapping up in 2022, which is quite remarkable when compared to heavyweights like AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” a show that once held significant cultural influence and had a critics’ score of 79%. Some might label it a hidden gem or sleeper hit.

With each new victory on Netflix, viewers are speculating if another chapter for “A Discovery of Witches” might be in store. Initially, the creators envisioned a three-season run, adapting one book from the trilogy for each installment. True to their vision, they brought the storylines to a close and remained faithful to the original material. In an interview with Decider, showrunner Sarah Drake praised the finale of season 3, terming it as “a beautiful, organic ending” for the series. Despite this conclusion, she hinted at potential future appearances for character Diana, leaving a glimmer of hope for fans.

I feel deeply connected to her. She’s left an indelible mark on me. Typically, I can easily let go of characters and move on, but this one seems to linger in my feelings.

Although the main books from the trilogy have been adapted, there are other books set in the All Souls Universe that could be developed further. The latest addition to this series, titled “The Black Bird Oracle”, was published this past July. This is the fifth book in the series and follows on from events that occurred several years after those depicted in “The Book of Life”, which was the third book in the trilogy and formed the basis for season three of “A Discovery of Witches”.

Additionally, if the creators decide to develop the storyline from the fourth book, “Time’s Convert,” which centers around Marcus MacNeil’s vampire life, there’s a potential for a spin-off show. With fresh content being published and a burgeoning fanbase, they might consider returning to the series. At present, though, there’s no announcement about a fourth season in production.
