Would Jai Courtney Return As Captain Boomerang In The New DCU? His Honest Thoughts

As a die-hard DC fan with years of comic book lore etched into my soul, I find myself eagerly anticipating the unfolding of the new DC Universe (DCU). The recent interviews by Jai Courtney, our beloved Captain Boomerang, have piqued my interest and rekindled the fervor within me. While he seems hesitant to take on a new character in the DCU, his ardent desire for an origin story of our favorite bandit makes me hopeful that we’ll see him wielding those deadly boomerangs once more.

Currently, DC’s movie studio is undergoing significant transformations. The end of the DCEU (with its streaming availability through Max subscription) has sparked great anticipation for upcoming DC films that will introduce the new DC Universe on the big screen. Fans are particularly eager for casting updates and potential appearances of characters from the former shared universe, such as Captain Boomerang. Recently, there have been rumors about Jai Courtney’s possible return to the role in the new DCU, but he himself has shared his thoughts on the matter.

The initial lineup of projects from the DC Universe is called “Gods and Monsters,” and fans are excited to discover who will bring iconic characters from the comic books to life. Although Captain Boomerang perished in “The Suicide Squad,” some fans are optimistic that he’ll work with James Gunn again and take on his role once more, as they transition into a new universe. During an interview about his upcoming film “Catching Dust,” he was queried about the possibility of portraying another character in the DC Universe, and candidly admitted:

Currently, Boomerang isn’t part of the DC plans, as far as I know. But let me tell you, he was always a character I enjoyed playing immensely. If given the chance, I’d love to see him return in some form or another. Honestly, it seems unlikely at this moment, but who knows what the future holds? In fact, if given the opportunity, I’ve always dreamed of exploring his origin story. He may not be the most beloved character from that universe, but the fun I had portraying him makes me believe a fresh take with a playful and lighthearted tone could be really entertaining.

Here it is. It seems that although Courtney has no intention of taking on a fresh role, he might reprise Captain Boomerang at some point in the future. However, whether or not this becomes a reality is yet to be determined.

In this particular run of DCEU, Courtney experienced an intriguing journey. The initial version of “Suicide Squad” earned an Oscar, yet it received harsh criticism from critics. Filmmaker David Ayer asserted studio meddling, and there’s ongoing discussion about #ReleaseTheAyerCut. Interestingly, Boomerang made a return in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” only to be abruptly eliminated in the opening scene of the movie. During an interview with ComicBook, Courtney hinted at the possibility of portraying that villain again for a third time.

Listen, I’d jump at the chance if a call came and they needed help reviving that gaming aspect. You know, dusting off the old skills!

Indeed, it seems quite promising. We’ll simply need to be patient as we find out if James Gunn requires Captain Boomerang’s character, and whether he extended an invitation to Courtney to portray her in another multiverse setting. Here’s to hoping, given that Gunn often collaborates with the same individuals repeatedly.

It’s quite intriguing to consider whether additional DCEU actors might appear in the new DCU. Many speculate that Aquaman actor Jason Momoa could take on a fresh role following his mysterious video post after meeting with DC. Some enthusiasts are eagerly waiting to find out if Margot Robbie will reprise her part as Harley Quinn, given her portrayal in three different movies.

The DCU will kick off with Superman on July 11th. For now, check the 2025 movie release dates.
