Blue Bloods Finale: 3 Characters Who Need A Happy Ending (And 2 Who Won't Get One)

Oh, my dear Erin Reagan! She’s been through the wringer, hasn’t she? From her tumultuous marriage to Jack, the heartaches with the likes of Robert McCoy and Charles Rosselini, to her career stagnation as an assistant district attorney. It’s high time this resilient lady got a taste of genuine happiness!

In a matter of months, the popular series “Blue Bloods” will conclude its 14-season run at the pinnacle of CBS’ programming. Although a spin-off is in the works, details about the cast and air date remain undisclosed. As the final chapter approaches, it’s fitting to envision ideal conclusions for the Reagan family. However, some members might not or shouldn’t receive contented endings. There are certainly characters who deserve a peaceful departure towards a blissful afterlife.

Regardless of whether the series concludes with bittersweet fates for its principal figures (such as a heroic death or a state funeral, contrasted with content families, lasting relationships, and arch-enemies vanquished), such outcomes are bound to captivate viewers. However, here are three characters who merit a positive finale, while two others may not experience happiness, despite their deserving accolades they might aspire to receive.

Maria Baez

Blue Bloods Finale: 3 Characters Who Need A Happy Ending (And 2 Who Won't Get One)

Maria Baez, portrayed by Marisa Ramirez, has gradually moved towards happiness during her tenure on “Blue Bloods.” Her harrowing bond with her drug-addicted brother Javier (Kirk Acevedo), her parents’ divorce, and the persistent harassment from criminals she’s imprisoned have all made her a resilient woman who could surely enjoy a long vacation in Hawaii or a fortunate win in the New York lottery.

And no, a happy ending for her doesn’t necessarily mean she needs to get together with Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg). For her, good news might entail a career advancement, or moving to the suburbs with her adopted daughter, Elena. It might be as simple as just getting away from the city and getting a fresh start. That, incidentally, is why she’s a wonderful candidate to lead a “Blue Bloods” spin-off  — but until then, Baez is our top pick for someone who deserves a little happiness when the series closes.

Henry Reagan

Blue Bloods Finale: 3 Characters Who Need A Happy Ending (And 2 Who Won't Get One)

In simpler terms, Henry Reagan (played by Len Cariou) is the head of the family and has been organizing their frequent get-togethers for quite some time. He’s not only a strong influence on his son, Frank (Tom Selleck), but also a seasoned cop who manages to keep the family’s law enforcement in check. Occasionally, leftover cases from his extensive career reappear, adding complications for everyone involved. With the Reagan family’s stories coming to an end and him being quite old, there’s no one else on the show who deserves a calm, peaceful retirement more than Henry does.

Perhaps he’ll develop an interest in fishing or discover his ideal spot for unwinding while allowing the children to play freely. Such an outcome seems fitting for Henry, ensuring a contented conclusion. To end Henry’s story on a somber note or worse, ending his life entirely, would be unkind and unnecessary – not unlike mistreating a puppy. A predictable ending might signify a shift in leadership, but keeping him alive, cheerful, and cherished among us seems more appropriate instead.

Erin Reagan

Among all of Frank’s family members, Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan), the rebellious one, has had the most challenging time finding stability. Her marriage to Jack (Peter Hermann) brought about Nicky (Sami Gayle) and a great deal of strife. She’s endured numerous failed relationships, including her contentious romance with Robert McCoy (Holt McCallany) and her fleeting attraction to Charles Rosselini (Bobby Cannavale). Professionally, although she’s advanced in her career at the District Attorney’s office, she’s been stagnant as an assistant district attorney for a long time. It would be delightful to witness her rise to higher positions.

Grant this young woman a fulfilling romance soon! It’s heartening to imagine her political aspirations coming true, demonstrating that stepping away from law enforcement for a public service career was wise. A touch of romantic happiness would certainly add to the storyline. In fact, even a brief scene or two between her and Nicky could leave viewers delighted.

Frank Reagan

Blue Bloods Finale: 3 Characters Who Need A Happy Ending (And 2 Who Won't Get One)

Frank Reagan finds fulfillment in his service-oriented lifestyle, and he’s content with the life he has built. Since it’s been confirmed that he won’t retire from “Blue Bloods,” it seems unlikely that any significant changes will occur in his professional life. This also suggests that his romantic life, which has remained dormant since the passing of his wife, is unlikely to be rekindled. It’s possible that Frank’s story may not end in sheer misery, but it probably won’t result in the joyful conclusion that his family and grandchildren might expect.

A satisfying outcome for Frank might be that his life carries on smoothly, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, with his father still offering guidance. While this scenario could be heartwarming and pleasant, it may not offer the personal growth or thrilling experiences needed to bring him the true happiness he deserves.

Danny Reagan

Blue Bloods Finale: 3 Characters Who Need A Happy Ending (And 2 Who Won't Get One)

Let me clarify this point: It’s important to note that Danny Reagan hasn’t necessarily deserved an unhappy ending; however, it seems unlikely that “Blue Bloods” will provide him with a happy one. This is largely due to Danny’s own inflexible personality. Following the death of his wife, Linda (Amy Carlson), Danny is dipping his toes back into dating. Both of his sons are currently in college and pursuing their individual paths. It’s unlikely that Danny will ever take on Frank or even Henry’s position at the family head of the table anytime soon. At this stage, he appears to be stuck, with little change expected in either his career or personal life unless the show takes a drastic turn. In other words, a content ending may not be forthcoming for Danny.

The sad truth of the matter is that someone needs to be out there on the streets, caring for others while Danny tries to cope with his loneliness. In a strange way, Danny Reagan’s singularity — and indeed, his personal dissatisfaction, which adds to his love of justice. Hopefully there’s something better for him out there, but for now, it looks like he’s going to leave prime time with a life that’s not as rich as the one he had when the show began. What a pity.
