As a gamer with a profound appreciation for art and history, I find Julie Mehretu’s creation at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago to be a breathtaking masterpiece that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of change, growth, and civic engagement. Being a long-time admirer of Barack Obama and his legacy, I can’t help but feel inspired by Mehretu’s visual dialogue about historical movements and social transformation.
The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, is taking shape, with its iconic structure – a granite-covered tower containing a significant art installation – now being constructed. Julie Mehretu’s masterpiece, titled Uprising of the Sun, has been installed on the north side of the building. This 83-foot-tall glass tower consists of 35 painted glass panels and symbolizes Mehretu’s investigation into historical events such as the Civil Rights era and Chicago’s impact on social transformation. Drawing inspiration from figures like Barack Obama, John Lewis, and various artists including Robert S. Duncanson, Jacob Lawrence, and Ethiopian artist Afewerk Tekle, the artwork blends these significant moments with visual cues from their works.
The artist took inspiration from various sources, such as President Obama’s 2015 speech at Selma and her own ties to the Midwest and Chicago. The structure’s layers and hues were created to engage visitors in a visual conversation about history, rising above, and transformation. Mehretu stated to The Art Newspaper, “I aimed to pay tribute to Chicago’s past and President Obama’s legacy by narrating a tale about how change unfolds.
Mehretu’s artwork contributes to a comprehensive plan for the center, which will function as a hub for community and civic activities. With a public library, gardens, and numerous art installations, the center intends to foster future leaders. In summary, the installation is aligned with the center’s objective of promoting civic participation. As Valerie Jarrett, CEO of the Obama Foundation, remarks, “Art plays a crucial role in inspiring the next generation of leaders,” according to President and Mrs. Obama.
