Lacey Chabert Tells The Most Adorable Mean Girls Story About Her Daughter Wondering What ‘Fetch’ Means

As a gamer who grew up in the 2000s, I can’t help but feel nostalgic when reminiscing about the cultural impact of films like Mean Girls. Lacey Chabert, who played Gretchen Weiners, is a beloved figure from my childhood, and it’s fascinating to see how her real-life journey mirrors that of her iconic character.

Twenty years after Regina George, played by Lacey Chabert in Mean Girls, told Gretchen Weiners that “fetch” would never catch on, we’re still using the term today. It seems that the character portrayed by Chabert is responsible for this popular slang phrase becoming a trend. Now that she’s a mother to young children and a star in Hallmark Movies, she shares an endearing story about trying to explain “fetch” to her daughter, pondering what it means.

The word “fetch” may have been incredibly misunderstood when Gretchen Weiners tried to populate it in Mean Girls. But because of what a classic the teen ‘00s film is, “fetch” easily comes to mind when thinking of this movie. Lacey Chabert is surely trying to bring “fetch” to her household, but she told an adorable story to The Today Show about how that’s easier said than done:

When she was still young, she’d often ask, “What about fetch? Why does everyone keep saying it to you?” I recall this happening a few years back. More recently, she inquired, “Mom, do other people watch the movies you create?” To which I replied, “Yes dear, they’re not just for our family.

Since eight-year-old Julia Mimi Bella Nehdarmis, Lacey Chabert’s daughter, is puzzled by the meaning of “fetch” (a term from one of her mom’s films), it’s quite endearing that she’s curious about this British slang. After all, she has no idea how many people worldwide enjoy watching her mother’s movies. So, there’s really no cause for Lacey to feel “unfairly targeted” by Julia’s confusion over the term.

Beyond being well-known for her role in “Mean Girls,” Lacey Chabert has also established a strong identity on the Hallmark Channel, particularly through her popular Christmas movies. Her latest Hallmark movie, titled “His & Hers,” was recently released. Additionally, she’s working on a new Hallmark TV series called “Celebrations with Lacey Chabert,” where she plans to throw epic surprise parties for individuals who have significantly impacted her life and the community. A shining example of this generosity can be seen in her sweet bridal shower surprise for her friend Kimberly J. Brown. In essence, Chabert’s kindness is simply “so fetch.

The term “fetch” as we know it today was coined by Tina Fey, both writer and star of Mean Girls. Instead of adopting the current lingo used by children, she created her own word based on the concept of being fetching or attractive. Since Gretchen’s character in Mean Girls is all about setting trends, this made perfect sense. The fictitious term has since been utilized when referencing Mean Girls, and it’s no surprise that it found a place there given its roots in British slang. In the 2024 movie musical adaptation, this was cleverly disguised as “slang from an old movie,” which is amusing without causing offense.

In the Walmart Black Friday ads themed around “Mean Girls”, “Fetch” was a clever nod to the movie. Lacey Chabert, reprising her role as Gretchen, commented on her daughter’s clique’s appearance for photos, only to be corrected by her own daughter to stop attempting to revive “fetch”. Fear not, Gretchen! It has already become a hit. You can watch Lacey Chabert’s full interview about this on the Today Show below:
