As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for binge-watching and discerning storylines, I can’t help but feel a rush of anticipation as I delve into this latest Netflix offering, His & Hers. The star-studded cast, led by Tessa Thompson, Jon Bernthal, and Pablo Schreiber, along with the intriguing psychological thriller genre, has already piqued my interest.
Fresh from his Emmy victory, Jon Bernthal is set to appear in his next project. Star of “The Bear” and Pablo Schreiber have secured important roles in Netflix’s adaptation of “His & Hers,” with Tessa Thompson serving as executive producer and taking on the lead role. This series is characterized as a captivating and intricate psychological thriller.
In a six-episode series, Thompson portrays Anna Andrews, a journalist who has withdrawn into seclusion in the sweltering city of Atlanta. Gradually distancing herself from her friends and work, she leads a lonely existence. However, when she hears about a murder in Dahlonega, Georgia – her hometown – Anna’s attention is rekindled. She becomes engrossed in the mystery, determined to uncover the truth behind it.
In the role of Jack Harper, Bernthal will portray a detective from the Sheriff’s Office who is married to Anna but finds himself distant due to their strained relationship, which has been further complicated by grief and deceit. After losing his previous job, Jack returns to his small hometown of Dahlonega where he resides with his sister and niece. Described as a man of integrity who often struggles with his choices, Jack is currently grappling with a murder case that has recently come into his hands, causing him significant distress.
Schreiber will portray Richard, an exceptional camera operator at the local news station, who is married to the rising star anchor Lexy Jones. Lexy has recently taken over from regular anchor Anna who’s been absent. When Anna resumes her role and selects a story about a murder in Dahlonega to report as a field reporter, Richard is chosen to be her cameraman.
The logline implies that Jack has an unusual suspicion regarding Anna’s role, as he seems to be drawing her into the focus of his personal inquiry. Additionally, it mentions that there are two perspectives in every story: “His and Hers,” suggesting that deceit is likely present from one or both parties.
The series hails from filmmaker William Oldroyd, who’s adapting Alice Feeney’s book with the same title. It started filming this autumn, but as of now, a release date hasn’t been set yet.
In addition to Thompson, director-writer Oldroyd (responsible for the first episode), showrunner-writer Dee Johnson (known for Fellow Travelers, The Good Wife, ER), and writer Bill Dubuque serve as executive producers for the Fifth Season series. Kristen Campo is also involved as a producer for Campout Productions, while Jessica Chastain, Kelly Carmichael, and Kishori Rajan take on these roles for Freckle Films and Viva Maude respectively.
In 2020, shortly following the book’s release, Chastain’s Freckle Films acquired the rights to Feeney’s book.
2024 saw me snagging the Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Emmy at the Creative Arts Emmys for my portrayal of Mikey Berzatto on FX’s The Bear. Besides The Bear, I’ve also made my mark on other shows like American Gigolo and We Own This City. Before that, I was known for my roles in Netflix’s The Punisher and AMC’s The Walking Dead.
Shreiber, known for his roles on “American Gods” and “Orange Is the New Black”, has since appeared in the limited series “Defending Jacob” and “Candy”, and more recently, he starred in a two-part adaptation of “Halo”.
