Josh Brolin Won't Play Hal Jordan In The Green Lantern Series After All, But I Still Want Him To Get Some DC Redemption

As a long-time DC enthusiast with memories of flipping through comic books during my youth, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment upon hearing Josh Brolin has passed on the role of Hal Jordan in “Lanterns.” Having watched him bring both Thanos and Cable to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I was eager to see his portrayal of another iconic superhero. However, as someone who lived through the disappointing experience that was Jonah Hex, I can understand why Brolin might be hesitant to revisit the DC world so soon.

One of the upcoming television series set within the new DC Universe shared universe is centered around Lanterns, featuring Green Lantern Corps members Hal Jordan and John Stewart who find themselves embroiled in a sinister mystery on American soil when they investigate a murder in the heartland. It was recently speculated that Josh Brolin might portray Hal in this Green Lantern series, but it appears he won’t be taking on the role. Despite this, I remain hopeful that Brolin will have another chance to shine with DC, given his less-than-satisfactory performance in Jonah Hex. Now, this show is set to air first on HBO before becoming available for streaming with a Max subscription.

As a fervent fan, I was thrilled to learn about the recent update on the Lanterns project from THR. They revealed that Timothée Chalamet, famously known for his role in Dune, turned down an offer to play Hal Jordan. Apparently, he declined the offer towards the end of August, and made his decision last weekend not to be part of the project. Unfortunately, no reasons were given as to why Chalamet isn’t interested in Lanterns, but maybe we’ll find out soon who’s being considered for the role next.

Given that the character of Hal Jordan from Lanterns is set to be an experienced Green Lantern working alongside the newcomer John Stewart, it’s not surprising that the producers might have Josh Brolin in mind for the role. With his star power, he could definitely attract a larger audience. However, I must admit a sense of relief that Brolin declined Lanterns, as I thought he was too old to convincingly portray Hal Jordan. Ideally, the next actor should be younger but still capable of embodying a long-standing Green Lantern Corps member. On a positive note, I’m hoping that DC Universe will find another opportunity for Brolin to shine in one of their projects, as I don’t want Jonah Hex to be his only contribution to the DC universe.

In 2010, the film “Jonah Hex” was unveiled, featuring Josh Brolin as the lead character – a disfigured ex-Confederate soldier turned bounty hunter. This man had a tumultuous encounter with John Malkovich’s Quentin Turnbull, the individual responsible for killing his family and leaving him for dead. Supporting cast included Megan Fox, Michael Fassbender, Will Arnett, and Michael Shannon, among others. Unfortunately, this film was both panned by critics and failed at the box office. However, it didn’t hinder Brolin’s success in the superhero genre, as he later played Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Cable in “Deadpool 2.

After completing his tenure at Marvel, it would be exciting to witness Brolin take another crack at the DC universe. If Green Lantern Hal Jordan doesn’t pique his interest, perhaps he’d consider playing characters like Commissioner James Gordon in The Brave and the Bold. I believe he could also do justice to Swamp Thing, a role that has its own upcoming DC film. However, given the flop that was Jonah Hex, I’m hoping that the heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, can find a suitable role for Brolin within the DC Universe, just so we can move past the 2010 movie.

The series titled “Lanterns” is being overseen by Chris Mundy, known for his work as showrunner on “Ozark”. Alongside him, Damon Lindelof and Tom King will serve as executive producers. Preliminary plans suggest filming will take place from January to June of 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia, with a projected air date in the year 2026.
