Luar SS25 Wants You to Throw Shade

As a gamer who has lived through the vibrant streets of New York City, I must say that Luar‘s Spring 2025 show at NYFW was nothing short of electrifying! The energy and attitude exuded from this collection were palpable, reminding me of my own journey navigating through the city’s diverse cultures and expectations.

At Rockefeller Center during the Spring 2025 fashion show by Luar on Tuesday night, one of the week’s most awe-inspiring events unfolded, featuring stars like Madonna and Ice Spice in the front row, Offset on the catwalk, and numerous metallic Ana bags scattered around.

Titled “En Boca Quedó” (often used in a playful way to throw shade in the Dominican Republic), this collection exuded attitude with kitten-heeled knee-high boots and Oxford loafers making their debut, bold statements created from twisted leopard print, and the Yahaira bag, inspired by designer Raul Lopez’s daring drag persona, all confidently showcased their style.

In a nutshell, “[En Boca Quedó]” means ‘I stay in the mouth,’ which suggests that even after someone leaves, their actions or words may linger and become topics of conversation, whether the talk is positive or negative, as Lopez pointed out in his show notes. Let’s delve deeper into this phrase.

As a gamer, I express my experiences growing up in New York City through my video game character’s style. The tension I felt was like a tightrope walk between the expectations of my Latino community and my personal journey towards self-discovery. I yearned to fit into both worlds, yet their rules often clashed within me.

In his design style, Lopez’s fabrics, textures, colors, and shapes resonate with the “primitive survival instincts” that helped him endure and thrive in New York’s demanding, absorptive environment while finding himself. Oversized double-breasted coats featured generous sleeves and closely fitted hoods for protection, while knit dresses similarly expanded to envelop models’ heads with snug protective barriers. Shoulder padded trench coats offered multiple layers of textural complexity, and tracksuits served as extra-large protective gear.

Luar’s designs weren’t just about mysterious masks; it’s a brand famous for bold, attention-grabbing pieces. Reflecting his self-assured personality, Lopez’s outfits exuded confidence – they were proud of their power and many were eager to showcase it. Shiny black suits glistened as if wet, formalwear was designed for dramatic strides, workwear sets loudly proclaimed the brand’s identity, and skin dared to walk the runway beneath sheer shirts and shorts, paired with shiny leather boots reaching up to the thigh. Gold-toned Ana bags, adorned with charming charms thanks to a high-end collaboration with American Express, added a touch of luxury.

Beneath the bright lights of a towering city landmark, Lopez took a walk along the catwalk, greeted by radiant smiles and applause from New York’s high society. “Mother!” one spectator shouted. “Go granny!” another cheered, a nickname earned in the ballroom scene. The warmth on the floor was genuine, and the vibrant atmosphere silenced any doubts about New York Fashion Week’s survival. If young Raul could see where he would end up, he would be amazed. No drama, just truth.
