‘Emily in Paris’ Boss on Emily’s New Adventure and “Up and Down” Relationship After Season 4

As a writer, I always strive to create characters that resonate with audiences and evoke strong emotions. And when it comes to Emily in Paris, I believe we have certainly achieved that. The relationship between Emily and Gabriel is complex, filled with ups and downs, much like real-life relationships. It’s important for the audience to understand both perspectives, which is why we delve deeper into Gabriel’s feelings in season four.

[This story containts spoilers from Emily in Paris season four, part two.]

Emily Cooper’s Roman trip wasn’t just a regular holiday; it also led her into a fresh journey of love and self-discovery.

In the first half of season four, Emily in Paris found herself in a delightful situation with Gabriel. They had both confessed their love for each other, and since Camille had vacated Gabriel’s apartment, he was finally able to be alone with his new girlfriend. However, as is often the case in Emily in Paris, this idyllic happiness didn’t last long.

Following a month-long break, the second part (now available on Netflix) resumed its storyline. The first episode found the couple celebrating Christmas Eve with Camille’s family in Megève, as Emily’s flight to Chicago was canceled. Gabriel abandoned Emily at the peak of a ski slope to pursue Camille, leaving her stranded on the mountain until a enigmatic Italian man assisted her descent. Upon reuniting with Gabriel, Emily ended their relationship, expressing her frustration over always being second fiddle to Camille.

At times, they possess a remarkable compatibility and bond, but there are hurdles in their path,” Darren Star, creator of Emily in Paris, shares with The Hollywood Reporter about the fleeting romance. “Perhaps Emily and Gabriel aren’t destined to be together at this moment. Perhaps their time will come later.

As the season unfolds, I find myself eagerly anticipating the return of the enigmatic Italian gentleman from Megève – none other than Marcello Umberti, portrayed by Eugenio Franceschini. In due course, he effortlessly captivates me during an exceptional evening in the City of Lights. My curiosity piqued, I accept his invitation to explore Rome, followed by a journey to his quaint hometown, Solitano, renowned for its exquisite cashmere production.

Star shared that she intended Marcello to be a breath of fresh air for Emily following the turmoil with Gabriel, serving as a new romantic prospect. Unanticipatedly, he enters Emily’s life and presents numerous opportunities for her – a different nation, a distinct culture, and exciting experiences.

In the final season of Emily in Paris, Agence Grateau decides to open a branch in Rome, and Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) suggests that Emily takes charge, making her consider staying in Italy with her new love interest. Meanwhile, Mindy is jetting off to Shanghai for the role of a judge on Chinese Popstar, effectively self-imposing an exile from China. Camille is embracing single parenthood as she adopts a baby, while Gabriel has a heart-to-heart talk with Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) that leads him to Rome, as he realizes he’s missing out on the “wonderful woman” due to his arrogance.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share some insights about the upcoming twists in the Emily-Gabriel-Marcello love triangle, straight from the creators, and the potential return of Rome in the future seasons of “Emily in Paris”, all while keeping my fingers crossed for a season five renewal!

Over the past several seasons, I’ve been struggling to connect emotionally with Camille (Camille Razat). However, by the finale of season four, she managed to earn a modicum of my sympathy. How did you feel about her character arc throughout this series?

It seems clear that Camille felt isolated and alone. She pondered the impending child she was carrying with Gabriel and what their future might hold for both of them. To be frank, Camille, at the conclusion of the previous season, was puzzled and uncertain about her choices and destinations. After taking some time to reflect and sort out her thoughts, I believe she believed that having a baby with Gabriel meant they would be intertwined in each other’s lives. I don’t think their connection was premeditated or part of a scheme to be together, but there was an expectation that the baby would bind them emotionally, and I think it was a significant letdown when she discovered she wasn’t pregnant.

We found out early on in part two that Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) moved on, and I was torn because I really happy for him, but was also hoping Emily (Lily Collins) and Alfie would get back together. Why did it hit Emily so hard?

It seems to me that everything seemed to affect her deeply. In that instant, it appeared as if she chose poorly in every decision. I believe she truly cared for Alfie. There was a chance for them to remain together at the start of the season, but I sensed Emily might have felt her feelings were with Gabriel instead. It was a chain of events, almost like fate. I think Emily was content for him, yet sad because she found herself alone on Christmas without anyone else.

In Gabriel’s (Lucas Bravo) departure from Emily atop the mountain in Megève, it appeared as if he had pushed her to the limit – what made this moment so significant for her?

It seems she understood her position as second in importance to him wasn’t sustainable for her. In the aftermath, there was a potential for reconciliation but that didn’t happen. From Gabriel’s perspective, their relationship often revolved around Emily. A significant scene showcases a heated argument where he expresses their communication is poor, and they don’t truly understand each other because their relationship is conducted in different ‘languages’. Despite this, Gabriel’s past is deeply intertwined with Camille, and it’s not that he didn’t feel for Emily, but I believe he emphasized how the relationship was heavily skewed towards his perspective. There were aspects of their relationship that were unevenly balanced.

Oh yes, the memory of that powerful moment just popped up. Then, as if things couldn’t get any more intense, Genevieve (Thalia Besson) appeared on the scene, adding to the emotional turmoil. But hey, life goes on, right? (Laughs)

(Laughs) I believe that particular moment carried significant weight. It marked the first instance where Gabriel openly expressed his feelings from his perspective. In my opinion, he was struggling to balance several aspects of his life. He was attempting to preserve a relationship with Emily while simultaneously maintaining the illusion of being a devoted father and partner to the child he believed he was having with Camille. He seemed to think he could manage everything perfectly. However, the realization that this wasn’t possible left him disheartened. Yet, it also felt to me like Emily was treating him unfairly.

Are you concerned that we’re overly protective of Emily and Gabriel to the point where some people might eventually tire of seeing them together and prefer they spend time apart?

It’s uncertain. I believe genuine relationships often experience highs and lows, and at times, it might seem appropriate for the characters to be together. However, continuously portraying them as happy may not align with audience expectations. Therefore, I suspect that despite their strong connection, there are challenges preventing Emily and Gabriel from being together right now. Perhaps they’ll find each other again in the future.

As a devoted admirer of the captivating characters, Eugenio Franceschini’s Marcello and Emily, I must confess that my feelings for them were profound. At certain moments, I found myself yearning for Emily to leave behind Gabriel and embrace the potential of a future with Marcello. Could you enlighten me on the purpose behind your decision to bring Marcello into the narrative?

I was thinking about introducing a new romantic figure for Emily, serving as a refreshing change following the turmoil with Gabriel. Unexpectedly, Marcello enters Emily’s world, presenting her with numerous opportunities: a different land, a distinct culture, and thrilling experiences ahead.

The final chat between Gabriel and Alfie in Paris left me in tears, particularly when Alfie expressed that Gabriel’s pride was hindering “an extraordinary woman.” Could you please share more details about that emotional encounter?

I believe Alfie deeply values Emily, and in the long run, he seemed to realize that perhaps Gabriel and Emily were destined for each other. He recognizes the role that pride and misunderstandings played in their relationship’s downfall. He doesn’t want Gabriel to repeat his own mistake because he believes pride was a significant factor in his own relationship with Emily. Perhaps there was an instance when he could have expressed his feelings more openly, like saying, “I don’t care about the obstacles. I choose you, and you are the one I want.” Unfortunately, he didn’t seize that opportunity, and I think he doesn’t want Gabriel to make a similar mistake as he did.

At the end of season four, there was a hint that Emily’s story might shift towards Emily in Rome. If/when the series gets renewed for season five, would you be interested in delving deeper into this potential change of setting?

We’ll spend some time in Rome. But she did not change her Instagram handle to Emily in Rome.

She almost did.

It’s not accurate to say that she left Paris. Instead, it should be noted that Agence Grateau has established an office in Rome, allowing them to operate in multiple cities. This means that Emily could potentially divide her time between Rome and Paris, but she is not planning on abandoning Paris altogether.

Emily in Paris season four is now streaming on Netflix.
