Having attended numerous exhibitions over the years, I can confidently assert that this immersive glass art piece stands out as one of the most captivating and thought-provoking displays I’ve encountered.
Marshmallow Laser Feast collaborates with Johnnie Walker on an exciting glassmaking project, resulting in a display called “Liquid Light” during the London Design Festival.
The installation, found within The Old Selfridges Hotel, comprises numerous glass droplets that appear to float unsupported. Its creators aimed to provide an experience highlighting the intricate equilibrium between robustness and delicacy, while enveloping viewers in a tapestry of design history, skillfully woven in glass. As Barnaby Steel, creative director at Marshmallow Laser Feast, puts it, “Our goal was to craft an immersive journey that celebrates the harmony between strength and fragility, and unfolds a tale steeped in design heritage.
Transformed by skillful manipulation of light and darkness, this stationary artwork unfolds into an interactive, engaging encounter for viewers, complete with a melodious soundtrack.
In essence, if we consider it from a particular perspective, storytelling can be traced back to the rhythm of spoken words, as changes in air pressure become sounds that travel from the speaker’s lips to the listener’s ear. Similarly, glassblowing has its own unique language, where gravity, molten glass, and human breath combine to create a frozen symphony, much like words suspended within the fabric of time and space.
For Johnnie Walker, the setup showcases motifs associated with their significant debut happening during the design festival – a brand-new whisky bottle touted as the “lightest in the world” at only 180 grams. As Jennifer English, Johnnie Walker’s Global Brand Director, put it, “This new lightweight bottle is an embodiment of elegance; however, it underscores the potential for minimizing glass weight.
