Jenna Ortega Opens up About Failed Audition for Tim Burton's Dumbo

As a devoted fan of Jenna Ortega‘s captivating performances, I find her journey in Hollywood to be nothing short of inspiring. From her humble beginnings to starring alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, it’s clear that she has not only earned every role but also left an indelible mark on modern cinema.

Despite Jenna Ortega securing lead roles in Tim Burton’s recent projects such as “Wednesday” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” it doesn’t automatically guarantee that she won each part she tried out for under Mr. Burton’s direction.

Indeed, the actress recently had an engaging chat with Michael Keaton, her co-star from Beetlejuice, as part of GQ’s Epic Conversation series. During their discussion, she shared memories of auditioning for a role in Tim Burton’s 2019 live-action adaptation of Dumbo, a movie that also features Keaton and marked Burton’s comeback to the film industry following a three-year hiatus, as mentioned by Ortega.

I recall trying out for the film ‘Dumbo’. At that time, I was around fourteen years old and absolutely thrilled. The thought of Tim creating a movie again was exciting since it had been quite some time. I found myself thinking, ‘What a fantastic chance this would be!’

I’d become accustomed to hearing ‘no’. For instance, actors are expected not to react emotionally when they’re turned down. However, after being rejected from Dumbo, I felt really disappointed for weeks and worried that I might never work with him again.

Jenna Ortega Is an Important Modern Scream Queen

As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but marvel at the stellar career of Ortega, one of today’s most captivating actresses. Her horizon is filled with intriguing ventures, and she’s set to shine yet again in Burton’s triumphant comeback to Tinseltown with the 2024 sequel to the iconic 1989 horror comedy, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Additionally, she’ll once more step into the shoes of Wednesday Addams for the eagerly awaited second season on Netflix. Other upcoming productions include the enigmatic Death of a Unicorn, the poignant Klara and the Sun, and an as-yet-unnamed film from the talented Trey Edward Shults.

At the age of 21, Ortega is rapidly making a name for herself as one of Hollywood’s brightest young acting talents in the horror genre. Although she had a minor part in Iron Man 3 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was clear early on that horror was her calling, as evidenced by her small role in Insidious: Chapter 2. Ortega has an uncanny ability to take on strange and unconventional roles. Her recent involvement in notable horror films has sparked discussions about her potential status as a contemporary scream queen.
