As a seasoned gamer of musical theater, having witnessed the rise and fall of countless productions over the years, I must say that the upcoming Broadway transfer of “Buena Vista Social Club” has piqued my interest like no other. Having grown up with the original album, the prospect of seeing this tale unfold live on stage is akin to finally completing that elusive, decades-long quest in my favorite video game – an achievement I never thought possible!
New musical Buena Vista Social Club is transferring to Broadway this winter.
The play is centered around a band of musicians hailing from Cuba’s golden era, and it draws inspiration from the actual events that led to the creation of the Grammy-winning album, “Buena Vista Social Club.” After receiving positive feedback during its world premiere at the Atlantic Theater Company in December 2023, this production will make its Broadway debut.
As a gamer, I’m excitedly counting down the days until February 21st, when I get to immerse myself in the captivating world of a new Broadway show. This epic production is skillfully directed by Saheem Ali, with electrifying choreography by Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck. The thought-provoking script comes from the talented Marco Ramirez, while the powerhouse music team is led by David Yazbek. The adventure begins at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, before officially opening on March 19th. Can’t wait to embark on this extraordinary journey!
In 1996, Juan de Marcos González, a renowned Cuban bandleader, along with two producers, made a trip to Cuba where they collaborated with a group of musicians who were famous in the 1950s. They produced an album together, which gained popularity and sparked interest after its release. This album and the collective of musicians became the focus of a documentary film. The movie captures both the youthful and mature phases of these musicians, as well as their musical evolution over the years.
The Broadway production showcases Natalie Venetia Belcon as Omara, Julio Monge as Compay, Mel Semé as Ibrahim, Jainardo Batista Sterling as Rubén, Isa Antonetti as the younger Omara, Da’von Moody as the younger Compay, Wesley Wray as the younger Ibrahim, Leonardo Reyna as the younger Rubén, Renesito Avich as Eliades, Ashley De La Rosa as the younger Haydee, and Angélica Beliard, Carlos Falú, Héctor Juan Maisonet, Ilda Mason, Marielys Molina, Sophia Ramos among others.
