As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating the digital landscapes of comic book universes, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia when I think about Sony’s aborted Amazing Spider-Man series. I remember vividly the excitement that coursed through me as I watched Andrew Garfield swing into action, his web-shooters ablaze with promise.
Even with an entire Spider-Verse at our disposal, it’s hard to envision Spider-Man in the movies these days without the anchoring presence of Tom Holland. The 2015 deal to bring Spidey into the MCU fold forever changed the course of Marvel movies far beyond the new direction the web-slinger took from previous Spider-Man films, but it also effectively brought The Amazing Spider-Man series (stream both films in that run on Peacock right now), only midway through its planned four-movie run, to an unceremonious and abrupt halt.
The creative partnership between director Marc Webb and actor Andrew Garfield as they portrayed Peter Parker was gaining momentum with the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014, which set up potential future appearances of Marvel characters and comic book storylines. Regrettably, these plans never materialized into a fully-fledged Spider-Man series as Sony envisioned due to the hacking incident at Sony Pictures towards the end of 2014, leaking confidential information about upcoming films. As a result, it appears that Sony has decided to retire the Spider-Man suit worn by Andrew Garfield – presumably permanently.
After Garfield’s reappearance alongside Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it’s hard not to ponder: What untold Spider-Man tales might Sony have left unfinished when they switched gears from The Amazing Spider-Man to the MCU? As we never saw a third (and fourth) Amazing Spider-Man film, it’s impossible to say for sure. However, since our wall-crawling hero became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, numerous intriguing possibilities have arisen.
Original Amazing Spider-Man Franchise Plans
One key plan for Sony was to expand the Spider-Man series into a full cinematic universe, aiming to rival Marvel’s ever-expanding MCU. They envisioned incorporating the Sinister Six into this new world, with renowned writer Drew Goddard, known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lost, slated to direct one of several proposed Spider-Man spinoffs (including Venom, initially conceived under different creative leadership than the current Ruben Fleischer-directed version).
In the movie “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, hints about the Sinister Six were subtly dropped, potentially foreshadowing an exciting Spiderman confrontation if Sony had followed through with their initial plans. Although it’s hard to imagine exactly how a canceled Sinister Six film (originally intended for release before “The Amazing Spider-Man 3“) might have laid the groundwork for the third movie, various plot points left unresolved in the second film seemed to invite further development in a potential sequel.
In the heartbreaking events of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” Gwen Stacy, portrayed by Emma Stone, met a tragic end. This incident would have undoubtedly led to numerous challenges for Peter, potential resolutions we might have seen in future films such as Sinister Six or another Amazing Spider-Man movie. However, the direction of Peter’s story following this loss remained uncertain, as Gwen was not the only female character set to appear.
In the same film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 subtly hinted at developing more stories for other characters: Remarkably, Felicity Jones emerged as Felicia Hardy (known as Black Cat in the comics), a suggestion that seemed to pick up traction — albeit momentarily — when it was announced in 2017 that Sony was planning Silver & Black, a separate Spider-Man spinoff focusing on Black Cat and Silver Sable. This project was said to have creative input from Lisa Joy, the creator of Westworld.
From a gamer’s perspective, when it comes to Sony’s spin-offs for The Amazing Spider-Man, none of them ever saw the light of day, leaving us fans to wonder what could have been. But there’s a glimmer of hope – Andrew Garfield’s return in No Way Home has sparked a fresh wave of enthusiasm among fans, urging Sony to revisit his corner of the Spider-Man universe once more. And let’s not forget the success of Venom – it proves that many of Sony’s abandoned ideas from the mid-2010s could potentially be profitable at the box office in the future, although they might need a few adjustments along the way.
