As a seasoned concert-goer and fashion enthusiast, I must say that the collaboration between Travis Scott and Rick Owens has truly outdone themselves with the “Tech Glade.” This innovative backstage lounge-studio hybrid is an absolute game-changer in the realm of cross-industry collaborations.
In the realm of fashion, collaborations between musicians and designers have become commonplace. However, Travis Scott and Rick Owens have pushed boundaries by creating a unique backstage furniture design concept. This innovative creation is both functional and modular, serving as an extension of Scott’s world-building for his “Utopia” album. As Scott explained to Architectural Digest, he imagined a space that mirrors his mind, a place that is comfortable, immersive, and multi-purpose. He wanted a space where he could record, watch movies, relax, and converse – all in one setting.
Known as “Tech Glade,” this unique space combines the comfort of a lounge with the functionality of a studio, featuring adjustable seating units covered in black French army wool blankets. Crafted from Batipan plywood, these pieces create a softly lit roof sheltering seat cushions below. Damien Quintard, a renowned French producer who has collaborated with Scott and artists such as Justin Bieber and Sade, was enlisted to design a studio within the structure, enabling Scott to work efficiently during his travels. Each lounge section can be effortlessly dismantled and rearranged according to the tour’s city stops.
In 2019, Michèle Lamy, a longtime creative collaborator of Owens, originally designed the “Glade,” a unique upholstered furniture piece that Lamy described to Architectural Digest as reminiscent of “lush meadows beneath a canopy of delightful trees.” The reinvention of this upholstered furniture piece emerged naturally as an extension of the work initiated during Scott’s 2024 SNL performance, which showcased Owens’s brutalist-style Pompidou bed in black, along with Rick Owens clothing worn by the rapper.
From now until the end of October, “Tech Glade” will accompany Scott on tour. Later in October, it’s set to be showcased at an upcoming Rick Owens Furniture exhibition at Salon 94 in New York City. In early 2025, this exhibit is scheduled to take place as well, featuring brand new Rick Owens Furniture designs, existing pieces made from novel materials, and audiovisual creations by the designer himself.
