As a long-time admirer of Shu Qi’s captivating performances and groundbreaking career, I am absolutely thrilled about her directorial debut, “Girl.” Her rich cinematic journey, spanning from Taiwanese masterpieces to blockbuster hits, has not only established her as a formidable talent but also paved the way for this bold step behind the camera.
Taiwanese actress Shu Qi has completed filming for her first directorial venture, a project that was previously shrouded in secrecy. Mandarin Vision Production Company shared a sneak peek of the upcoming movie titled “Girl“, along with an image of Shu directing on set during a recent location shoot.
The movie, creatively penned and helmed by filmmaker Shu, is slated for an Asian premiere around 2025 as per the producers. Whether Shu will also act in the film titled “Girl” remains undisclosed. Mandarin Vision has chosen to keep further details about the project under wraps.
A renowned figure in fashion and a favorite among filmmakers spanning the Chinese-speaking realm, Shu achieved her initial prominence in the 2001 Taiwanese masterpiece, Hou Hsiao-hsien’s film Millennium Mambo. Subsequent successes include Feng Xiaogang’s If You Are the One (2008), Stephen Chow’s Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013), Gone with the Bullets by Jiang Wen, Wuershan’s hit movie Mojin: The Lost Legend (2015) and Hou’s last production The Assassin. At home in Taiwan, she has garnered two Golden Horse Awards and three Hong Kong Film Awards. Furthermore, she has served on the jury for the Berlin International Film Festival (2008), Cannes Film Festival (2009), and Venice Film Festival (2023).
Shu expressed his joy as filming has finished, eagerly anticipating the moment when he can unveil this movie to viewers around the world,” (is a possible paraphrase of the original statement).
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that I’ve been part of the production of a movie, executive produced by the seasoned Taiwanese producer Yeh Jufeng, who previously worked with Shu on the 2017 feature “The Village of No Return.” This new project is backed by Chinese production companies such as CMC Entertainment, Wow Momentum, J.Q. Pictures, and Aranya Pictures.
