As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who has spent countless hours poring over the pages of Adventure Comics, I couldn’t be more thrilled about James Gunn’s upcoming DCU and the inclusion of Krypto, Superman’s trusty canine sidekick. Ever since I first laid eyes on Krypto’s adorable, super-powered visage in my childhood comics, he has been a beloved character that I’ve followed through his various adventures.
In James Gunn’s version of the DC Universe, characters like Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Authority, and Swamp Thing will be joined by a new member: Krypto, the Superdog. Originally created by writer Otto Binder and artist Curt Swan, Krypto first emerged in a Superboy story within Adventure Comics #210, published in March 1955. Since his debut, he has been well-loved among fans as one of Superman’s close companions. Not only that, but Krypto starred in his own animated series titled “Krypto the Superdog.” Most recently, Dwayne Johnson lent his voice to Krypto in DC’s “League of Super-Pets.
In a recent conversation on the “Capes and Lunatics Podcast,” renowned comic writer Mark Waid hinted at the transition of Krypto from animation to live-action. During this discussion, Wade praised director James Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe and seems to have disclosed that Krypto would be part of the upcoming Superman film. Although the movie has already been announced to include several DC characters like Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, and Guy Gardner, this is the first indication that Krypto will appear in the production.
I generally appreciate Gunn’s respectful take on such subjects, not overly so but still maintaining a sense of humor. After all, the film features a dog with heat vision, can you imagine that?

Mark Waid is a significant figure in the world of comic books, particularly with regards to the Superman series. He’s best known for his work on the 1996 comic “Kingdom Come,” illustrated by Alex Ross, and the design of James Gunn’s Superman emblem draws inspiration from this iconic work. Additionally, Waid penned “Superman: Birthright,” a twelve-issue series that modernized Superman’s origin story for contemporary times. Given his connection to the Superman franchise, it’s possible that during his visit to the set of “Superman” in May 2024, he may have glimpsed concept art for Krypto.
It was widely expected that fans might see Krypto, Superman’s canine superhero companion, in James Gunn’s DC Universe due to his significant role in Tom King’s “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which is being turned into a film for release in June 2026. Including Krypto in the upcoming Superman storyline would be an intriguing nod to his past as Superman’s pet and might pave the way for future appearances. In fact, Gunn has shown interest in Krypto, even contemplating directing a standalone Krypto movie in the past. When DC presented him with the opportunity to adapt any DC property for a film back in 2018, before he decided on “The Suicide Squad,” he seriously considered making a movie centered around Krypto.
