Ellen DeGeneres in Netflix Special Trailer: “I Got Kicked Out of Show Business”

As a gamer who has been around for quite some time, I have seen my fair share of twists and turns in the entertainment industry, but Ellen DeGeneres’ journey is one that truly stands out. It’s like playing a game where the rules keep changing without warning, and you have to adapt or get left behind.

In the preview for her forthcoming and last stand-up special on Netflix, Ellen DeGeneres shares with her followers what she’s been doing recently.

In the recently released sneak peek, the comedian shares some updates about his life since we last met. He’s taken up gardening as a hobby and also acquired some chickens.

Then comes the punchline: “Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business.”

Under Your Consideration: is set to air on September 24th, marking the second of a two-part deal with the streaming service, following her 2018 special Relatable, which was her first stand-up performance in 15 years. After a six-year hiatus, she’s back on the stand-up stage for this special.

When DeGeneres initially unveiled the special, she indicated it would serve as her farewell production, revealing her intention to share intimate aspects of her life and delve into, as hinted in the trailer, her past struggles with being ousted from the entertainment industry.

In the trailer, she remarks, ‘Contrary to her image as the ‘Be Kind’ girl, she wasn’t actually kind,’ she says. The challenge lies in the fact that I, a comedian who hosts a talk show, concluded each episode with an appeal for kindness: ‘Be kind to one another.’ If I had ended the show by saying something like, ‘Have a great day, but don’t forget to insult your neighbors,’ people might have been shocked to discover my genuine kindness.

In the scorching summer of 2020, I found myself at the heart of some unpleasant workplace allegations. These claims triggered an extensive investigation that ultimately resulted in the departure of several top-tier executives associated with my long-standing talk show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” Known for championing kindness as the cornerstone of my brand, I began season 18 with a heartfelt apology.

She clarified that the accusations were not the sole factor behind her final choice, but admitted they did influence her life significantly. In her own words from 2021, “My very essence revolves around bringing joy to others, and with the talk show, my focus was on spreading positivity, kindness, and compassion. Unfortunately, everything I believe in was being criticized severely.” She went on to say candidly, “Honestly, it wrecked me. If I were to be truthful, it took a heavy toll on me.

This past summer, Ellen DeGeneres embarked on a stand-up comedy tour titled “Ellen’s Last Stand … Up“. However, the last performances were unexpectedly called off in July, thereby concluding the tour prematurely. While on tour, there were rumors that she had made jokes about being ousted from show business due to being perceived as “mean”.

As stated in the tagline, For Your Approval marks the conclusion of Ellen DeGeneres’ distinguished comedy career: “Ellen delves into her personal experiences since being ousted from show business. From the everyday tasks of tending to chickens and mastering parallel parking, to the raw truths of fame as a brand name celebrity, she explores her comedic origins and keeps audiences laughing through life’s most genuine and absurd situations.

In other parts of the trailer, DeGeneres mentions that she entered show business as a means to mend her past childhood hurts. “I figured if I could bring joy to others, they’d accept me,” she explains. “And if they accepted me, it would boost my self-esteem.” To which she humorously adds, “And I’m grateful for the financial rewards that came from that!

Ben Winston and his production company Fulwell 73, in collaboration with DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi, are responsible for the creation of For Your Approval. The special is directed by Joel Gallen, who also helmed Chris Rock’s 2023 Netflix live special titled Selective Outrage.
