Box Office Pundit Claims Coppola’s Megalopolis Has Pitiful Presale Numbers

Box Office Pundit Claims Coppola's Megalopolis Has Pitiful Presale Numbers

As a seasoned film enthusiast with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the upcoming release of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis has me feeling a mix of anticipation and trepidation. The early box office tracking for this ambitious project is less than encouraging, and as a fan who has seen Coppola navigate through both triumphs and trials in his illustrious career, I can’t help but feel a pang of concern.

In a departure that may not live up to expectations, Francis Ford Coppola’s comeback with the film “Megalopolis” seems to be indicating disappointing pre-sale figures according to initial tracking. This upcoming project represents a significant risk for both Coppola and Lionsgate. Notably, Coppola himself has invested more than $100 million into the production of this movie, while Lionsgate has taken on the majority of the marketing expenses.

Based on the data from TheFlatLannister, who monitors ticket sales for Megalopolis, Coppola’s new film is unlikely to be one of his biggest box office hits. Out of 160 screenings tracked, only 249 tickets have been sold out of a total of 30,118 seats available, which represents just 0.83% of the total tickets. This low percentage suggests that Megalopolis may be in a precarious position at the box office. TheFlatLannister even commented that it has “the worst presales start I have ever tracked… Wow,” and added that they likely won’t continue tracking its sales, finding it completely pointless.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve been keeping tabs on the buzz surrounding the upcoming film, Megalopolis. Surprisingly, it seems that merely 18% of moviegoers are privy to this flick, which is quite reminiscent of the niche appeal of an indie horror gem like Bagman. It’s safe to say that, at present, Megalopolis is a far cry from the blockbuster spectacles that typically command millions upon millions of dollars.

Lionsgate Is Having a Troubling 2024

The production company responsible for blockbusters such as “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight” series, known for their numerous successful films, have found it challenging to achieve box office success this year. Although we’ll learn the exact earnings of “Megalopolis” when it premieres on September 27, two of their recent releases have failed to impress audiences so far.

Eli Roth’s movie adaptation of Borderlands, according to both audiences and critics, received a harsh reception, with some humorously suggesting it proved the video game-to-film curse still exists. The film earned only $8.6 million in its opening weekend, which plummeted to a mere $2.35 million in the second week (making it the largest second-week drop for any 2024 movie). This is despite a reported production budget of between $110-120 million. The disappointing box office performance of Borderlands has effectively ended any prospects for a sequel or franchise. A similar financial loss was experienced by Lionsgate shortly after, following the release of their adaptation of The Crow, a remake of the 1994 cult classic starring Alexander Skarsgård. Since its theatrical debut, The Crow has only managed to gross $21.1 million worldwide. After its poor showing at the box office, The Crow is now available for streaming on VOD.

Regrettably, supporters of Francis Ford Coppola might face disappointment as the film’s initial predictions indicate potential setbacks in Megalopolis’ theatrical release. The film has already been marred by several issues that may influence its box office performance. A video surfaced online showing Coppola attempting to kiss an extra during filming, and he is now suing Variety for $15 million. Additionally, Lionsgate has had to replace their marketing team due to a trailer release featuring AI-generated false reviews for some of Coppola’s previous works such as Apocalypse Now and The Godfather.
