South Park Quietly Retired a Controversial Character

South Park Quietly Retired a Controversial Character

As someone who has been following South Park since its inception, I must say that the show’s decision to retire Mr. Garrison’s Trump character is both relieving and a bit sad. Relieving because it means we can move on from the political satire of the past few years and focus on other aspects of life in South Park. Sad because, let’s face it, Eric Stough’s portrayal of Mr. Garrison as Trump was spot-on hilarious.

As a devoted cinephile, I couldn’t help but notice the recent announcement from the creators of “South Park,” Matt Stone and Trey Parker, that they would be bypassing the 2024 presidential election. This revelation has cast a shadow over the future of their Trump-like character, Mr. Garrison. First introduced in 2016 as a teacher, then a presidential candidate, he’s made occasional appearances since then. These days, he juggles his roles as both a teacher and a Trump-esque figure, but it seems that this duality may soon come to an end.

According to Variety, the makers have chosen to delay the next season until after the elections.

Matt Stone expresses that over the course of four to five presidential elections, they’ve found it incredibly challenging, almost mentally overwhelming, to create “South Park” due to the apparent significance it appears to carry.

Trey Parker expresses that while Trump is certainly significant, he dominates so much that there’s less enjoyment. He’s unsure how else they could elaborate on the topic of Trump.

As a devoted fan, I find myself pondering about the future of Mr. Garrison’s character on South Park, given that the show has postponed its return until 2025, seemingly distancing itself from the Trump era. In the Season 26 finale, there were hints suggesting a potential comeback for Trump portrayal by Garrison, but it seems those hopes have faded away.

South Park Has Retired Numerous Characters in the Past

In the world of South Park, a Donald Trump parody is far from being the sole character to be taken off the air, and it’s likely that audiences will see more characters disappear in the future. As a show like South Park has been on for such a long time, it’s natural for characters to appear and vanish. The Chef character was retired as far back as 2006 when Isaac Hayes, who passed away, departed from the series. Hayes, a Scientologist, felt uncomfortable with how the show portrayed Scientology and issued a statement expressing his displeasure.

As a film enthusiast, I’d say: “Satire has its rightful spot in our world, yet, there comes a point where the line between satire and intolerant or biased views towards other people’s faiths gets blurred.

The character of Satan, who has been a significant figure in the series, is no longer present. The reason behind his departure remains unclear, but since 2018, he hasn’t made an appearance. There’s no rule preventing him from returning, given his past importance and memorable roles like being the antagonist in the movie “South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut“. In his final scene, surprisingly, Satan was killed by ManBearPig but then developed angel wings and ascended to Heaven. This unexpected and humorous event left fans intrigued, yet there’s no sign that he can’t revisit the world of “South Park” at some point.
