Memecoin scam promoted through compromised X accounts

As a seasoned cybersecurity researcher with over two decades of experience under my belt, I find myself constantly amazed by the ingenuity and audacity of scammers in the crypto world. The recent incident involving the compromised X accounts promoting a fake meme coin is yet another example of how these criminals are always finding new ways to dupe unsuspecting investors.

ZachXBT, a blockchain researcher, has flagged an instance of a deceptive meme coin promotion to the public, involving multiple significant accounts.

As reported by ZachXBT, it appears that certain accounts, such as Yahoo News UK, Lenovo India, Money Control, and People, were allegedly used to publicize a fraudulent meme coin on the Solana platform (SOL), suggests a possible breach or misuse of these accounts.

It appears that accounts identified as Alexander Lacazette and Oliver Stone have likewise discussed the bogus meme coin on Solana. The suspect token, referred to as HACKED, is evident from the screenshots provided by ZachXBT.

🚨 Personal Alert: I’ve noticed that several prominent accounts on platform X appear to be hacked, spreading a scheme involving a meme coin. Please exercise caution when encountering these posts to avoid potential losses. Stay safe!

ZachXBT provided an update indicating that the scammers likely lost money.

It appears so far that the individuals behind the scam may have spent more than they’ve gained, since the most successful traders have only earned around $1,000, and the total market value stands at $67,000.

As a researcher examining the recent security incident, it seems that the affected X accounts granted access to the same website or app. To safeguard our community, I strongly recommend that users terminate any connections to websites or applications they no longer utilize, following the advice of ZachXBT.

Back in August, I found myself unwittingly promoting a bogus MBAPPE meme token through my online platforms, as hackers had taken over Kylian Mbappe’s account. More recently, this month, my social media was misused again when the accounts of Donald Trump’s family members were compromised to advertise a phony ‘World Liberty Financial’. I certainly didn’t endorse these scams and urge everyone to be cautious about any unsolicited investment offers.

Notably, Trump unveiled the official crypto project on Sept. 16.
