Stephen Amell Says an Arrow Movie Was Shut Down by Warner Bros.

As a long-time devotee of the small screen and a witness to the rise and fall of many beloved series, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I hear about the potential movie version of Arrow that never came to be. Stephen Amell’s words about revisiting the world of Arrow with an “hard R” rating have me yearning for a time when superhero shows could break bones and drop F-bombs without fear of studio intervention.

It’s been uncovered that there were initial ideas for a movie adaptation of “Supernatural,” but those plans were scrapped by Warner Bros. During its peak scripted years, the series was one of The CW’s top performers and still holds that position today. In his Inside of You podcast, Robbie Amell, who starred in the show, discussed it at length, and during their conversation, Rosenbaum raised the possibility of a potential revival for the program.

In essence, what I’m suggesting is a return to something from the past, a scenario where I can let loose with humor, as if it were an adult-rated (R) version of Arrow, allowing for rough language and even the occasional breaking of bones.

Although this project appears to have great potential for success, the chances of it actually being produced are low given the current lineup of DC films scheduled for release in the near future. This is especially disappointing for Amell, as he previously mentioned that a movie based on the project was once under consideration.

As far as I can tell, it was terminated at the production stage due to what seemed like decisions driven by fear.

It’s clear that the Arrowverse, which was once a major highlight for The CW, has effectively come to an end. Over time, most of the DC-based TV shows have ended their run, with the cancellation of The Flash in 2023 marking the end of an era. At this point, it’s challenging to foresee any potential resurgence or continuation in the near future.

The Arrowverse Saved The CW

As a fervent advocate for The CW, I can confidently attest that while the network did shine with hit shows like “Gossip Girl” and “The Vampire Diaries,” its successes were primarily confined to these areas. However, the introduction of “Arrow” in 2012 marked a transformative juncture in The CW’s chronicles. In an enlightening conversation with The Showrunner Whisperer podcast, executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that the triumph of “Arrow” was the sole beacon of hope for The CW, and it lived up to its promise. He expressed that this successful series single-handedly rescued The CW from potential obscurity.

Following the commissioning of the pilot, a lunch meeting with Peter Roth, president of Warner Bros. TV, made it clear to us that Arrow’s success was crucial for the continuation of The CW. In other words, ensuring the show’s longevity wasn’t just about keeping Arrow running, but also about preserving the entire network. So we faced not only the initial pressure of maintaining our own show, but now an added responsibility to uphold the network as well.

Despite the financial success of Arrow and its accompanying DC shows, recent adjustments by The CW have led to the cancellation of several scripted series, including those within the Arrowverse, at the hands of new investors Nexstar. These changes were made with a goal to reduce costs and generate profits for the network. As a result, it seems highly improbable that there are any parties currently interested in reviving Arrow and continuing its storyline in a new movie format.
