Lady Gaga on Why She Never Shut Down Rumors Claiming She’s a Man: “I Didn’t Feel Like a Victim With That Lie”

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen countless lives unfold within virtual worlds, I must admit, Lady Gaga’s journey strikes a chord of admiration. Her resilience and ability to navigate the stormy seas of misinformation with grace and wit is truly inspiring.

Lady Gaga is discussing the reason she didn’t address speculations earlier in her career about her gender identity, as she is not a man.

In 2011, the multi-talented celebrity dismissively addressed a gossip rumor in an interview with CNN, stating, “Why should I spend my time and issue a statement clarifying whether or not I am biologically male? My supporters don’t care about it, and neither do I.” Recently, she openly discussed her ongoing struggle to combat misinformation spread online during her chat on Netflix’s What’s Next? The Future With Bill Gates.

In her 20s, Lady Gaga revealed to Bill Gates in the second episode, there was a gossip circulating that she was actually a man. During her worldwide tours and promotional activities for her albums, nearly every interview she gave would bring up this topic due to manipulated images online. People would ask, ‘What’s your take on these rumors about you being a man?’

The actor from “The Joker: Folie à Deux” stated that she refused to respond to the questions as she didn’t wish to be portrayed as a victim by that falsehood, and instead considered the perspective of a child who might doubt if someone in the public eye like herself would feel embarrassed by such accusations.

She went on to explain that there have been instances where addressing a rumor wasn’t beneficial for others’ welfare. In such situations, she attempted to spark thought and cause disruption in a different manner. Instead of correcting the misinformation, she used it as a tool to instigate another form of disruption.

Lady Gaga mentioned that false stories have been published about her since she turned 20. As an entertainer, she finds it amusing.

The Grammy-winning singer was a major tour de force early in her music career, being known to take risks and disrupt the status quo. She later moved into Hollywood, showcasing her acting skills with her award-winning performance in 2018’s A Star Is Born. Lady Gaga now stars in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux, due out Oct. 4.
