Cult Classic Crime Comedy Clue Gets Barbarian Director Zach Cregger

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the news of Zach Cregger directing the reboot of the iconic whodunit comedy “Clue” has me all aflutter! Having grown up on VHS tapes and DVD rentals, I can fondly remember the countless times I’ve watched Tim Curry as the enigmatic butler Wadsworth in the original 1985 film.

The remake of the beloved crime comedy cult-favorite is reportedly securing its director, with Zoe Cregger – famously recognized for her work on the successful horror film “Barbarian” – rumored to be part of the team. This year, Sony obtained the rights to the “Clue” franchise for both movies and TV, with TriStar Pictures and Hasbro Entertainment preparing to produce a fresh interpretation based on the classic board game. The announcement about Cregger’s participation stems from trusted industry insider Jeff Sneider.

It seems there are discussions happening about Cregger potentially taking on the director role for the Clue movie, which Sony’s TriStar Pictures acquired the film and TV rights to from Hasbro’s classic board game in April, as well as Sony Pictures Television.

It has been mentioned that Shay Hatten is set to pen the script, with a notable resume including John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Chapter 4, as well as Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon movies and his own zombie film Army of the Dead.

The movie adaptation of the Hasbro board game “Clue,” released in 1985, was directed by Jonathan Lynn. This film featured actors like Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Leslie Ann Warren, Christopher Lloyd, Eileen Brennan, Michael McKean, and others. Despite a lackluster performance at the box office initially, it gained significant popularity as a cult-classic following the DVD rental boom and the resurgence of nostalgia during the mid 2000s digital era.

For several years now, Hollywood has been trying to revamp the classic game-turned-movie “Clue.” The timing might be just right given the recent popularity of whodunit stories. In the last decade, mystery franchises have been making a resurgence, with productions like the 2017 movie “Murder on the Orient Express” marking the start of this new era. Despite the mixed reception for both “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Death on the Nile” due to the controversies surrounding their cast members, the 2023 film “A Haunting in Venice” was generally well-received, garnering a 75% critical rating and an audience score of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The films “Knives Out” by Lionsgate and Netflix, as well as “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” offer a contemporary spin on traditional murder mysteries. These movies have garnered fantastic feedback and the series is planning to produce another installment, titled “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” scheduled for release in 2025. The whodunit genre is also thriving on television, with shows like Hulu’s Emmy-winning “Only Murders in the Building” and their original series “Death and Other Details, ” although the latter was unfortunately discontinued after a single season.

It’s evident that people are eagerly engaged with the resurgence of the ‘whodunit’ genre, making it intriguing to observe how Sony and Cregger plan to surprise us and distinguish themselves amidst the rising competition from other franchise contenders.
