‘Happy Valley’ Creator Sally Wainwright Unveils Female-Led Cast for BBC Drama ‘Riot Women’

As a longtime fan of Sally Wainwright‘s captivating storytelling and richly drawn characters, I can hardly contain my excitement for her latest project, “Riot Women.” With an impressive ensemble cast that includes Joanna Scanlan, Rosalie Craig, Tamsin Greig, Lorraine Ashbourne, and Amelia Bullmore, this six-episode series promises to be a riveting exploration of friendship, creativity, and the power of self-expression.

Sally Wainwright, the mind behind popular TV series such as “Happy Valley”, “Last Tango in Halifax”, and “Gentleman Jack”, is now focusing on a new BBC endeavor titled “Riot Women“.

The six-part drama series, produced by Drama Republic, recently revealed its star-studded cast while filming progresses in West Yorkshire, England on a Thursday.

Joanna Scanlan (“After Love,” “The Thick of It”) will head the cast as Beth, with Rosalie Craig (“Moonflower Murders,” “Serpent Queen”) portraying Kitty, Tamsin Greig (“Sexy Beast,” “The Completely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin”) as Holly, Lorraine Ashbourne (“Sherwood,” “Alma’s Not Normal”) as Jess, and Amelia Bullmore (“The Buccaneers,” “Vienna Blood”) playing Yvonne.

In the movie titled “Riot Women,” we delve into the lives of five females, accompanied by two energetic backup vocalists. They band together to form an impromptu punk-rock group and participate in a local talent competition. As they craft their initial original composition, they uncover that they have significant messages to convey – and this is their medium for expression.

When a powerful, hidden truth slowly emerges, linking Kitty and Beth, the unsuspecting artistic geniuses of the band, in an intricate love triangle, there’s a risk it could shatter everything they’ve built.

Sally Wainwright, who is responsible for creation, writing, and production, expressed: “I’ve never been more thrilled about a project than this one. Nothing has ever come close. Wow! We have five incredible actresses gracing our screens as the ‘Riot Women’. It’s both nerve-wracking and exhilarating.

As a gamer, I’m super excited to share that in the game “Riot Women,” we’ve got some fantastic original tunes from the band ARXX! Anne Reid, known for her role in “The Sixth Commandment,” will be playing Nancy, the mom of characters Holly, Yvonne, and also Jess’s Aunt Mary, portrayed by Sue Johnston. Plus, Peter Davison, famous for his stint as the Doctor in “Doctor Who,” Claire Skinner from “Outnumbered,” and Angel Coulby, who was a part of “Merlin,” are all joining the cast too! This is going to be an amazing ride!

In addition to the already announced cast, the series will feature Taj Atwal from “Line of Duty”, Chandeep Uppal from “Holby City”, Jonny Green from “White Lines”, Ellise Chappell from “Yesterday”, Macy Jacob Seelochan from “Shadow and Bone”, Tony Hirst (known for his role in “Hollyoaks”), Shannon Lavelle from “Hamlin”, Amit Shah from “Happy Valley”, Rick Warden from “Red Eye”, Ben Batt from “Domina”, Natalia Tena famous for her role in “Harry Potter”, Melanie La Barrie from “& Juliet”, Oliver Huntingdon from “Sherwood”, Richard Fleeshman from “The Sandman”, Olwen May from “A Very British Scandal”, Kevin Doyle known for his work in “Downton Abbey” and Nicholas Gleaves who appeared in “Bodyguard”.

The show is jointly commissioned with BritBox International, and its global distribution is managed by Mediawan Rights, while Entourage Ventures are involved in the production.

The series titled “Riot Women” is set to debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the United Kingdom next year. Meanwhile, BritBox International has announced that it will broadcast this series in the U.S. and Canada.
