Dark Comedy Sweetpea Starring Fallout's Ella Purnell Gets Release Date & New Trailer

As a film critic with a penchant for dark comedies and a soft spot for breakout performances, I can confidently say that Ella Purnell‘s latest project, “Sweetpea,” is not to be missed! After her impressive stint as Lucy MacLean in “Fallout” and the charismatic Jackie Taylor in “Yellowjackets,” Purnell has proven time and again that she can carry a series with her captivating presence.

In Ella Purnell’s new series, Sweetpea, it’s not a casual “everything’s fine,” but rather a heart-pounding exclamation of “oh my goodness, help me, she’s trying to kill me!” The first trailer for this dark comedy has left viewers intrigued, and now Sky and Starz have officially confirmed its release date. This earlier than expected arrival will give fans an opportunity to appreciate Purnell’s natural English accent. In Sweetpea, Rhiannon (Purnell), a woman often overlooked and struggling with her relationship, discovers an unexpected joy in taking lives. Across six episodes, the series follows Rhiannon as she desperately attempts to conceal her deadly secret from her boyfriend and coworkers, based on C.J. Skuse’s novel of the same name.

The show “Sweetpea” is helmed by director Ella Jones and penned by Krissie Ducker, Kristie Swain, and Laura Jayne Tunbridge. Along with lead actress Ella Purnell, this series also features Jon Pointing, Nicôle Lecky, Calam Lynch, Leah Harvey, Dustin Demri-Burns, and Jeremy Swift in key roles. The official summary goes like this:

Rhiannon Lewis (Purnell) isn’t particularly noticeable; people on the street rarely give her a second thought. At work, she often gets passed over for promotions, the man she’s interested in refuses to commit, and her father is critically ill. However, everything changes abruptly when Rhiannon reaches her breaking point and loses control. The shy wallflower vanishes, replaced by a woman with unlimited potential…Rhiannon experiences a dramatic life change as she embraces a captivating power, but can she keep the dark secret of what she’s capable of?

It’s fair to assume that Ella Purnell is enjoying a successful year and making a significant impact in television productions. Many viewers have probably seen her in the starring role of Lucy MacLean in Fallout, where she portrays an innocent vault dweller compelled to venture into the Wasteland to save her father. The series was recently nominated for several Emmys, among them Outstanding Drama Series.

Prior to her role in “Fallout”, Purnell was most famously known for portraying Jackie Taylor, the captivating leader of the soccer team in “Yellowjackets”. Similar to “Fallout”, “Yellowjackets” was nominated for 10 Primetime Emmys; however, Purnell’s performance was once more disregarded. If her face isn’t familiar to you, her voice might be, as the British actress also embodies Powder/Jinx in Netflix’s popular adaptation of “Arcane”. The second season of this cherished animated series is approaching, and Jinx will create chaos in the city of Piltover following the dramatic conclusion of Season 1.

Sweetpea
releases on Starz and Sky on October 10.
