As a seasoned movie reviewer with a keen eye for gritty action thrillers and a soft spot for Hollywood legends, I must say that Frank Grillo’s latest venture, “Long Gone Heroes,” is a must-watch. This film, set against the tumultuous backdrop of Venezuela, boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including none other than the iconic Andy Garcia, Oscar-winner Melissa Leo, and Grillo’s real-life pal Mekhi Phifer.
We had a chat with actor Frank Grillo on the day his latest action-thriller titled “Long Gone Heroes” hit the screens. This film is based in Venezuela and boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Frank Grillo alongside renowned actors like Andy Garcia, Melissa Leo (an Oscar winner), and Mekhi Phifer, who happens to be a good friend of his. Over time, Grillo has collaborated with numerous distinguished artists and directors, and he’s also set to appear in the upcoming season of “Tulsa King”. In our previous conversation with him, we asked Grillo which action star he would like to work with someday, and he expressed a desire to team up with Sylvester Stallone. And now, here we are with this opportunity coming true!
Grillo shared with us that he found it interesting, as he recalled a similar conversation we had before. He’s known Sly for quite some time, and when Sly called him, it felt strange, almost like the universe was listening in. In essence, they had a fantastic time working on the season together, and it concluded with a surprise twist. Needless to say, Grillo is looking forward to it.
Based on our recent conversation about the show, it seems that Grillo’s character may have some exciting new storylines coming up in the next season.
Initially, our relationship was quite contentious, but it took an unexpected turn, which I found fascinating. I had a place that was rightfully mine, and [Sly’s character] was there without my consent. When I went to claim what was mine, as you can imagine, things unfolded in the usual manner. What I adored about this situation was that it allowed me to collaborate with [Sly] on some exceptional projects, drawing us even closer together. Perhaps we’ll revisit this dynamic again for season 3 of [Tulsa].

Grillo also shared some benefits of collaborating with Stallone, stating, “He’s an exceptional individual, and it’s no coincidence that he’s Sylvester Stallone. At his age… he doesn’t just show up; he comes ready to perform, and you had better be prepared for his set. You had better be prepared, not only memorizing your lines, but you had better understand your role… And I found myself in a challenging battle with him.” He went on:
Following the understanding that there exists a man, such as Rocky or Rambo, came the realization: ‘Ah, now you’re just another actor. Here we go.’ Yet, he embraces it wholeheartedly and holds it in high regard. He’s truly exceptional; perhaps one of the most cherished actors I’ve had the pleasure to collaborate with.
In the interim, film enthusiasts can look forward to watching Grillo and Phifer go head-to-head in “Long Gone Heroes”. Previously, they shared the screen in “Lights Out” earlier this year. Interestingly, their characters aren’t allies in this new film. Grillo found the antagonistic role enjoyable and praised the fighting sequences in “Long Gone Heroes”. He particularly enjoyed those scenes with Phifer. However, he also cherished the camaraderie between their characters in “Lights Out”. He expressed a desire to further explore that relationship if given another opportunity.
From Lionsgate, Long Gone Heroes is now available in theaters, on-demand, and on digital.
