As a longtime fan of Game of Thrones and someone who has closely followed the personal lives of its cast members, I must say that the rumors surrounding Lena Headey and Jerome Flynn’s alleged on-set feud after their breakup is certainly intriguing. However, after reading up on this subject, I am inclined to believe that these rumors may not hold much water.

It might come as a surprise, given the turbulent nature of Westeros depicted in Game of Thrones, that the actors portraying its characters have quite strong real-life friendships. For instance, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams, who played Sansa and Arya Stark, remain close friends to this day. Similarly, Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey (Tyrion and Cersei Lannister) share a bond off-screen as well. Remarkably, the real-life romance between Kit Harington’s Jon Snow and Rose Leslie’s Ygritte from the series has become a reality, with the two now married in real life.

However, it’s worth noting that one of the most significant romantic relationships off-screen for the show “Game of Thrones” didn’t seem to bring as much luck. Lena Headey and Jerome Flynn, who portrayed Bronn in the series, were in an on-and-off romance for years before the show started. The relationship came to a messy end in 2014. There have long been whispers that their split had an impact on set, with rumors suggesting Headey declined to appear in scenes with Flynn. But did this rumor hold any truth? Although they never shared a scene after the fourth season, it remains unclear whether these claims are substantiated.

In the year 2019, a week prior to the series finale of “Game of Thrones” being released, a British publication called The Sun reported that Lena Headey and Jerome Flynn had not shared any screen time together in the show following their split. Viewers of the program observed noticeable inconsistencies on-screen, with one particularly striking example occurring in Season 7’s episode “The Dragon and the Wolf.” In this installment, multiple groups gather to meet with Cersei in King’s Landing, but Bronn is mysteriously missing from this scene.

After the fourth season, the show made an effort to keep Bronn separate from King’s Landing. In Season 5, he teamed up with Jaime Lannister on a mission to Dorne, aiming to secure House Martell’s allegiance for Cersei’s agenda. Throughout the rest of the series, Bronn was predominantly paired with Jaime, most memorably when he rescued Jaime from a dragon attack in Season 7.

Although these unusual connections may seem odd when considered together, they don’t necessarily signal impending drama. In the early episodes of the series, Bronn was predominantly in King’s Landing, but he didn’t exhibit a strong on-screen rapport with Cersei. Instead, he spent most of his time with Tyrion, and their interactions never gave the impression that they were essential for the storyline. Among the many issues in the last two seasons of “Game of Thrones,” the show’s handling of Bronn is relatively minor on the list.

Jerome Flynn Insists There Was No Personal Drama

Above all, Jerome Flynn firmly dismissed those speculations during an interview at Nashville’s Con of Thrones in 2019. When a fan asked about the breakup rumors, he clarified, “In reality, we were both in the same scene together, and the last time I saw Lena, we were talking, so I wouldn’t take everything you read at face value… Lena is an exceptional individual and actress. I have great respect for her.” Interestingly, Lena Headey hasn’t publicly addressed these rumors one way or another.

Of course, Flynn could simply be trying to defuse a tense situation, but we have no way of knowing whether that’s true. And while it’s a strange coincidence how Bronn and Cersei never interact after Season 4, it’s also not inherently indicative of anything. Not to mention, even to this day, we still know surprisingly little about how production went down in the show’s final seasons. As such, while either argument about the breakup seems plausible, there’s no way we can know for sure, and we probably will never know until years down the line. Game of Thrones is streaming on Max.
