As a die-hard DC fan who has been following the ups and downs of the DCEU for years, I must confess that I’m still reeling from the loss of the Batfleck saga. Ben Affleck’s gritty, battle-worn take on Batman was a breath of fresh air, and his unapologetic approach to dishing out justice was both captivating and relatable. The thought that we never got to see him square off against the menacing Deathstroke, played brilliantly by Joe Manganiello, leaves me with a case of severe FOMO.
The DC Extended Universe (which is streaming with a Max subscription) officially ended with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, although fans are still unpacking the projects that arrived over the years. The studio had plenty of behind the scenes changes, as well as upcoming DC movies that were announced and dropped. That includes Ben Affleck’s Batman movie, and some recently released storyboards for that project have me suffering from some serious FOMO.
As we eagerly anticipate the premiere of the freshly introduced DCU (DC Universe) with Gods and Monsters, tidbits about the old shared universe continue to emerge. For instance, DC storyboard artist Jay Olivia recently shared on Twitter an artwork he made during the production phase of the Batfleck film. Take a peek at it below:
I mean, how cool is that? I loved Affleck’s take on Batman, and personally think it was a crime that we never got to see him take center stage in a solo flick. Justice League‘s credits scene set up a conflict with Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke that we never got to see. Which is why this storyboard panel is so thrilling.
In numerous formats like comics, Deathstroke poses a significant challenge for Batman. They share comparable abilities and have no qualms about taking lives. The idea of watching them clash in the depicted image is thrilling, unfortunately, we won’t get to witness Affleck and Manganiello engaging in fights as their DC characters in reality.
ultimately, Ben Affleck made his last appearance as Bruce Wayne in the movie The Flash, but he only portrayed one version of Batman in Andy Muschietti’s hit film. Affleck admitted that he figured out how to play the character effectively in this movie, despite Michael Keaton taking on the role of Batman during the second half of its duration. Regrettably, it appears that his interpretation of Bruce Wayne won’t be seen again anytime soon.
In the film “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, Ben Affleck first appeared as Bruce Wayne. Right from the start, he left a strong impression. He embodied the character with a powerful physique and portrayed him as a weary, battle-scarred hero. Although some cinema-goers criticized his tendency to resort to killing, most fans seemed to warm up to Affleck’s portrayal of Batman, known as “Batfleck”.
It’s unfortunate that Ben Affleck’s Batman movie didn’t come to fruition, but it seems Joe Manganiello, known for his role as Deathstroke in Justice League and the Snyder Cut, might have felt the most disappointment since he never got to fully explore the character. However, there’s always a possibility that James Gunn could give him a chance to reprise his role as Deathstroke in the DCU.
Starting from July 11th, the shared universe kicks off with James Gunn’s Superman. For now, keep an eye on the movie release dates in 2025.
