As a dedicated fan of ER and a witness to its remarkable impact on television, I can confidently say that the show’s love story between Dr. Doug Ross (George Clooney) and Nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) remains one of the most endearing and memorable aspects of this iconic series. Upon hearing the news, she let out a scream, a reaction shared by many viewers, I believe. The ending was perfect for us fans because Carol and Doug were truly meant to be together.
Due to the challenges Doug and Carol faced and Doug leaving the show, some fans might have thought they wouldn’t end up together. However, when Carol departed only to return and rejoin Doug in the finale (which was filmed discreetly), it brought tears of joy to many viewers. The couple, who later had children, were still married and working together in the final season. What’s heartwarming is that the actors portraying them have remained good friends off-screen as well.

15 years on since ER wrapped up, George Clooney and I, Julianna Margulies, have discovered a charming way to keep the series alive in our hearts. We often find ourselves slipping back into our beloved characters when we chat, and it’s one of the most heartwarming things ever.
Ultimately, it was only Carol and Doug who ended up being the ones. To this very day, when we exchange personal emails, George and I continue to sign off as ‘Love, Carol’ or ‘Doug.’
