Akshay Kumar starrer Atrangi Re's director Aanand L Rai feels it should have been theatrical release; ' I do regret not waiting for...'

As a dedicated follower who has witnessed the evolution of Bollywood, I must say that Aanand L Rai’s decision to release “Atrangi Re” on Disney+ Hotstar was a missed opportunity that he now regrets. Having had the chance to step into the digital world with this romantic fantasy comedy-drama film, I can understand his struggle in grasping the nuances of the OTT platform.

In late 2021, filmmaker Aanand L Rai unveiled his romantic comedy “Atrangi Re.” With the world still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, attending a movie theater felt like an elusive fantasy. Consequently, he opted to release it on Disney+ Hotstar on December 24, 2021. However, looking back now, he expresses remorse for not releasing it in cinemas instead.

While conversing via Zoom, filmmaker Aanand L Rai confessed that he chose to release Atrangi Re earlier than waiting a few more months for a theatrical premiere. He shared that due to circumstances, he had no choice but to present the movie on streaming platforms instead. He expressed his remorse, stating, “Indeed, I wish I had waited a bit longer. Usually, I don’t harbor regrets, but with Atrangi Re, I found that I should have been patient.

The director emphasized that the movie featuring Akshay Kumar, Dhanush, and Sara Ali Khan should have been watched on a large screen. He further noted that destiny played a role in its release, but the film continues to receive tremendous affection today. “Indeed, it would have been ideal for a big-screen experience,” he commented, explaining that the movie demanded two hours of focused attention. In an earlier conversation with us, Rai discussed his experience transitioning into the digital realm with the romantic fantasy comedy-drama film.

The director explained that it’s challenging for them to grasp the concept of an online streaming platform (OTT) for film premieres. He further noted, “When you first start using this platform, you may feel a bit disoriented. As a director, I measure a film’s success by sensing the audience’s emotions and determining if the content has resonated with them. For traditional cinema, you can gauge those feelings by Saturday, but on OTT platforms, it takes a week or even ten days. It’s a unique experience,” Rai said, expressing his satisfaction that the film struck the right emotional cord.
