Watching The Voice: What To Know About The Show, Coaches, Prize And More (Including The Best And Worst Things About Being A Fan)

As someone who has been following The Voice since its inception, I must say that this season promises to be as thrilling and unpredictable as ever! The format of only two weeks of live shows adds an extra layer of excitement, and I can’t wait to see how America will vote for their favorites.

13 years ago, when I first tuned into NBC on that unforgettable April night in 2011, I never dreamt that ‘The Voice’ would become such an integral part of my life. Fast forward to today, and here we are, with the 26th season of this iconic singing competition gracing our television screens in 2024. Over the years, I’ve been there for every dramatic Four-Chair turn, every nail-biting live finale, and every Adam Levine drama. Now, it’s not just a hobby – it’s part of my job too! Whether you’re an old fan or a newcomer, join me as we delve into the world of ‘The Voice’, exploring everything from how to watch it to the victor of each season.

What first attracted me to the show was its unique concept – the coaches on “The Voice” select singers without seeing them, solely based on their vocal talents. Plus, I appreciated the shift from harsh ‘judging’ like that seen on American Idol with Simon Cowell, towards a more supportive ‘coaching.’ Although there have been some highs and lows, those aspects continue to keep me engaged. So, let’s dive into everything you need to know about “The Voice.

In the upcoming Season 26, musical stars Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé will step into their coaching roles for the first time, having previously served as advisors. They’ll be joined by defending champion Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani, who is back for her eighth consecutive season.

Adam Levine Returning For Season 27

In a move that has sparked mixed reactions among fans, it was revealed ahead of time that NBC has secured Adam Levine for the Big Red Chairs in Season 27, slated for 2025. Notably, the Maroon 5 frontman had previously stepped down from the show following Season 16. With his past scandals, both on the show and in his personal life, including the sexting scandal that erupted in 2022, long-time viewers are bound to have strong feelings about his comeback.

In his second season, Adam Levine is set to team up with returning coaches John Legend and Michael Bublé, along with the fresh addition, Kelsea Ballerini.

Past Coaches Of The Voice

Initially, The Voice has been accommodating its coaches to join and leave based on their availability, resulting in a total of 20 well-known figures from the music industry guiding aspiring artists. Furthermore, three more renowned individuals joined as coaches for Seasons 26 and 27.

In theory, any coach could reappear on the show at some point – for instance, Adam Levine did return after a while – but there are certain coaches who might not make a comeback. Blake Shelton, who spent a record 23 seasons on the show, has stated that he would only consider returning if the original four coaches were to reunite. Kelly Clarkson appears to have left for good, moving her family and daytime talk show to New York City. Lastly, Christina Aguilera seems displeased with the show following her departure in Season 10, which makes me believe she has no desire to return.

Carson Daly Has Hosted Every Season Of The Voice

Regardless of who the coaches are, the constant is always the host – Carson Daly, who’s been maintaining the show flawlessly from its very beginning.

Who Won The Voice Season 25?

31-year-old Asher HaVon from Selma, Alabama triumphed as the winner of The Voice Season 25 on May 21, 2024, making history as the first openly LGBTQ+ contestant to secure the title. Not every finale unfolds according to audience expectations, but this time, even the opposing coaches concurred that HaVon’s performances week after week were unrivaled in quality.

What Famous Singers Competed On The Voice?

Several popular musicians you might not realize had auditioned for chair turn opportunities include examples like Melanie Martinez, who sang under Adam Levine’s guidance during Season 3, and Morgan Wallen, who later became a top country music artist but initially showcased his pop talent on Team Usher in Season 6.

Notably, some famous people’s kin have graced the stage of “The Voice” as well. For instance, Natasha (daughter of Candace Cameron Bure) and Briana (sister of Kaley Cuoco) are among them.

The Voice Has Always Been Friendly To Country Artists

Due to the presence of Blake Shelton and Reba McEntire as coaches, the NBC singing competition has consistently featured at least one expert in country music, attracting numerous aspiring artists from that genre who seek guidance from the most skilled. Contrary to popular belief, though, less than half of the competition’s winners have been associated with country music.

How The Voice Competition Works

In each new season, The Voice slightly alters its structure, modifying team sizes and providing coaches with extra features such as Saves and Steals for various competition stages. Here’s a summary of the rules for Season 26 (as per NBC):

Blind Auditions

In this round, “The Voice” stands out from other singing contests because each contestant performs to win the coaches’ approval. The coaches sit with their chairs turned away, and if they like what they hear, they press a button to turn their chair around, showing interest in that performer or group. If multiple coaches show interest, the decision is left to the performer who can then choose which team they wish to join. For Season 26, each team will have 14 members, and each coach will have one chance to block another coach’s selection.

Battles

In the Battle rounds, when every coach’s team is complete, team members compete against each other. The coaches assign a duet for these two singers and then decide which artist they wish to keep working with. The other singer is then eliminated. This season, each coach gets two chances, or ‘Steals’, to save an eliminated singer from another coach’s Battle round and add them to their own team. Each team will reduce from 14 to 9 singers in this phase.

Knockouts

Three-way eliminations are returning for Season 26, where each performer faces off against two fellow teammates. They’ll each select a song to perform, and after the three performances, coaches get to choose one contestant to advance. This season, each coach has one opportunity to “Steal” another singer from another team who was not chosen. Additionally, they can utilize a “Save” to protect a team member from elimination. At the end of this round, teams will consist of five members each.

Playoffs

Initially, I had anticipated that “The Voice” would return to live Playoffs for Season 26; however, NBC has clarified that it will be pre-recorded instead. In this stage, each team’s five members perform, and their coach selects only two to progress to the live shows. Unlike in past seasons, America’s vote won’t determine who moves on, and coaches can no longer save a third contestant or make use of Steals. A total of 8 contestants will advance to the Semifinals.

Live Semifinals And Finale

For this season, there will be just two weeks featuring live performances. On Semifinals week’s Monday, all eight contestants will perform. The audience’s votes will decide who advances to the live final. Contestants with the fewest votes on Tuesday will compete for the Instant Save, which is decided by viewers during that episode. Fans can vote again in the following Monday’s live finale, and the winner will be announced the next day.

How To Vote On The Voice

In Season 26, only viewers can cast their votes during the Semifinals and Finals. Last season’s voting process will likely be repeated, meaning each email address is eligible for one vote per voting method. You can choose between two options: voting at NBC.com or using The Voice app. Voting commences as the episode begins (8 p.m. ET) and ends at 7 a.m. ET. For Instant Saves, votes are cast via the app.

What Prize Does The Voice Winner Get?

Each victor on The Voice has been awarded $100,000 and a record deal, however, critics like Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and numerous past winners, have criticized the recording contract, claiming that artists are not adequately supported post-show.

Does The Winning Coach Receive Anything?

During his farewell show, Blake Shelton – having won an impressive 9 awards – was honored with a banner being raised, even though it’s the coaches themselves who usually don’t receive any physical prizes beyond the pride of bragging rights.

The Best Things About Being A Fan Of The Voice

Watching The Voice: What To Know About The Show, Coaches, Prize And More (Including The Best And Worst Things About Being A Fan)
  • The dynamic between the different combinations of coaches has always been almost as important as the musical talent on The Voice. Over the years there have been some fiery rivalries (Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera), bizarre matchups (Reba McEntire and Snoop Dogg) and even romance (Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani).
  • It’s also amazing to watch the artists grow under the tutelage of their coaches. Getting to see them work with today’s most successful musicians over the weeks really gives fans a peek behind the music industry curtain, and when the finalists take the stage for the live episodes — which feature full productions with choreography, backup dancers and huge set pieces — it’s amazing to see how they’ve transitioned into stars.

The Worst Thing About Being A Fan Of The Voice

  • The Voice’s Achilles heel has been its failure to produce any big superstars. While there are some recognizable names coming out of the show, it falls way short of American Idol when you consider the celebrities who started there (Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, etc.). It does get frustrating to invest in The Voice’s artists and then never hear of them again once the season’s over.

I trust that this tutorial has assisted you in answering all your questions regarding ‘The Voice’, and here’s to an enjoyable season filled with captivating acts and fresh victories for the competition’s contenders.
