As a lifelong DC fan and someone who’s spent countless hours poring over comic books, I can confidently say that the casting of Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has me absolutely thrilled! This guy has proven time and again that he can bring complex villains to life with an intensity that is both captivating and chilling.

Among the highly anticipated DC films for comic enthusiasts like me is the live-action adaptation titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow“, set to bring the space odyssey crafted by Tom King and Bilquis Evely to life, under the direction of Craig Gillespie. For some time now, it has been revealed that Milly Alcock from “House of the Dragon” will portray the fierce Supergirl, yet the identity of her adversary remains a mystery.

In recent developments, it seems Matthias Schoenaerts, famously known for his roles in “The Old Guard” and “Rust and Bone,” is rumored to be joining the DCU’s Gods and Monsters series. According to Deadline, not the Daily Planet, he will reportedly assume an antagonistic role, which isn’t a character fans have previously seen portrayed by multiple actors on screen.

In Superman: Woman of Tomorrow, Alcock’s character (alongside Krypto) will assist a young extraterrestrial girl whose father has been slain. This places them squarely in the crosshairs of the Krem of the Yellow Hills, a ruthless villain known for his propensity towards killing humans, women, and even dogs. As portrayed in the comic’s debut issue, he exhibits an intelligent knack for determining when to engage in conflict and when to withdraw.

It remains uncertain at this stage how closely Ana Nogueira’s screenplay will adhere to the original source material, but I secretly wish that the film would feature Krem in a larger number of scenes and action sequences. With Tom King’s unique narrative structure that jumps through time and the central focus being Supergirl, there is ample opportunity to develop Krem into an even more fearsome and imposing villain.

This Belgian actor has built a reputation as a leading man, both in Hollywood and beyond, through his performances in critically acclaimed films such as “Rust and Bone,” the original and U.S. remake of “The Loft” (both), “The Danish Girl,” “Red Sparrow,” “A Hidden Life,” and more recently, David O. Russell’s “Amsterdam.” He will reprise his role in “The Old Guard 2,” and is slated to portray St. Peter in Terrence Malick’s upcoming biblical epic titled “The Way of the Wind.

Despite no prior factors, Matthias Schoenaerts demonstrated his talent again in 2024 through HBO’s “The Regime”. Hubert Zubak was undeniably one of the most disturbed characters in the 2024 TV season so far, consistently showcasing his unwavering devotion and fanaticism for Kate Winslet’s character, who became progressively more paranoid as a world leader. The series itself received mixed reactions from viewers, but Schoenaerts’ performance (alongside Winslet’s) was one of the more stable aspects and displayed his ability to portray a believable character who does questionable actions for what appears to be the right intentions.

That’s some real villain shit right there, so expect him to bring that same energy to Krem and then some.

It’s likely that viewers have already heard, but Milly Alcock’s character Kara will make her debut alongside David Corenswet’s Kryptonian in James Gunn’s Superman. However, it won’t really be a solo adventure as the adaptation is expected to cast Ruthye, Kara’s vengeful alien companion, and other significant characters from the highly-acclaimed comic book miniseries.

The movie titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is scheduled to begin filming towards the end of 2024. It won’t be part of the 2025 cinema lineup, instead, it will hit the screens on June 26, 2026.
