DCU Supergirl Film Adds The Old Guard’s Matthias Schoenaerts As Villain

DCU Supergirl Film Adds The Old Guard's Matthias Schoenaerts As Villain

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a soft spot for superhero sagas and a deep appreciation for the nuances of casting decisions, I am genuinely excited about the direction James Gunn’s DCU is taking with “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” The casting of Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills is a brilliant move, considering his versatile acting range showcased in films like “Rust and Bone” and “The Old Guard.

The production of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film is advancing as they’ve chosen the main bad guy. This superhero film seems to be the second project in James Gunn’s new DCU after Superman. Actress Milly Alcock, known for House of the Dragon, will play Supergirl. Craig Gillespie, director of Cruella and Fright Night, is in charge. The movie will be a remake of the 2021 comic with the same name written by Tom King.

According to reports, the Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts has been chosen to play the main antagonist in the upcoming series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” Based on the comics, his character Krem of the Yellow Hills will be the man who murders a young girl’s father. After the girl hires Supergirl to seek justice, Krem becomes pursued by her. Additionally, Krem harms Supergirl’s companion, Krypto, making matters worse. Schoenaerts gained recognition for his role in the 2012 film “Rust and Bone,” which earned him a César Award for Most Promising Actor. He has also appeared in “The Danish Girl,” “Red Sparrow,” and Netflix’s “The Old Guard.

The announcement about Matthias Schoenaerts joining ‘Supergirl’ surfaces, following yesterday’s casting of Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan in ‘Lanterns’, the forthcoming Green Lantern series. As ‘Creature Commandos’ is slated for release on Max in December 2024, marking the unofficial beginning of the DCU, James Gunn’s plan, outlined in January 2023, seems to be progressing well. Now, with the antagonist determined, the next character role to be filled is that of Ruthye Marye Knoll, who essentially shares the lead with Supergirl in ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, and is the young girl whose father was murdered by Krem.

Teases for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow might be laid out in Superman, which will open one year before the film. Milly Alcock is rumored to have a cameo, and comic book writer Mark Waid recently confirmed that Krypto will appear in Superman, likely setting up the canine hero’s role in Supergirl. While many assumed either the Batman film titled Brave and the Bold or The Authority would be the first to follow Superman, Gunn has been adamant that DC Studios is prioritizing quality over meeting specific release dates. If a movie is not ready, they don’t rush it. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow being a more direct adaptation of a popular comic than drawing from various ones seems to have given it a leg up as development is moving along at a good pace.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
opens in theaters on June 26, 2026.
