Elizabeth Olsen Wants Marvel to Release Special Editions With No CGI

As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) over the years, I must admit that Elizabeth Olsen‘s recent remarks about wanting to see an unaltered version of an MCU film resonates deeply with me. The reliance on CGI in modern cinema, while impressive, often feels like a double-edged sword. It allows for breathtaking visual effects and fantastical worlds, but at the cost of potentially stifling the raw acting talent that lies at the heart of every story.

Elizabeth Olsen, who portrays Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has expressed a desire to witness an unedited version of the MCU, featuring raw footage without any visual effects (VFX). Ever since her debut in “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, portraying Scarlet Witch’s magical abilities on-screen has necessitated extensive use of CGI to transform Olsen’s finger movements into genuine magic. However, as the MCU movies have progressed, they have grown increasingly dependent on CGI, and Olsen now finds the filmmaking process challenging and surprisingly demanding.

In an interview with THR, Olsen openly expressed her annoyance about frequently working in front of green screens, as most of the details are later filled in using CGI. While the fantastical nature of the MCU necessitates some degree of CGI, for Olsen, spending a large amount of time acting in front of green screens significantly impacts the filmmaking experience negatively. Discussing her experiences working with green screens, Olsen stated:

As a follower, I can’t stress enough the need to immerse yourself wholeheartedly in this perspective that seems reminiscent of a child’s imaginative play during their seventh birthday.

To express her dissatisfactions, the actress is keen on watching a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film presented in a manner reminiscent of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ special features. Recenty, Director Wes Ball unveiled an uncensored version of his latest production, devoid of CGI. This unprocessed footage displayed actors donning motion capture suits as they portrayed their ape personas. This unpolished version has sparked a newfound respect among viewers for the intricacies involved in motion capture, and Olsen is advocating for a similar approach from Marvel Studios, expressing her desire by saying:

I think it’s reasonable to expect that, at some stage, they might unveil a raw, original version of one of their films, devoid of special effects, allowing viewers to appreciate the sheer effort and difficulty involved.

Will The Scarlet Witch Return to the MCU?

The last time viewers encountered Wanda Maximoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), she had completely morphed into the Scarlet Witch, frantically seeking out her “children.” The movie Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness hinted that this could be the character’s final chapter. In the ending scene, Wanda was buried under a crumbling temple and hasn’t been spotted since. Neither Olsen nor Marvel Studios have confirmed her involvement in any future projects yet. But just because she’s not currently planned doesn’t automatically mean her time with Marvel is over…

The concept of death seems less significant within the MCU due to the introduction of multiverse travel and characters surviving fatal injuries, such as Loki. Given this, spectators are hypothesizing that Wanda may make an appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars. This assumption arises from the film’s speculated roster featuring over 60 Marvel heroes, which seems vast compared to the assembly of characters in Avengers: Infinity War.

As a cinema enthusiast who’s deeply invested in the Marvel universe, I can’t help but ponder on what could be next for Wanda Maximoff if she’s ever brought back. Fans like me are eagerly anticipating that Marvel Studios will devise a more thoughtful approach to maximize her potential moving forward. After the captivating series, WandaVision, it seemed that Marvel Studios was grappling with how to integrate such an incredibly powerful character. In the meantime, we’ll simply have our fingers crossed and keep an eye out for any clues in the ongoing Disney+ Marvel series, Agatha All Along, regarding the destiny of The Scarlet Witch.
