The renowned artist, actress, filmmaker, and Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT) award-winner has initiated the production of a multi-episode documentary detailing her life and career. This project will be helmed by Frank Marshall as director and Alex Gibney as producer. As per the creative team’s recent announcement, this documentary aims to provide an intimate and all-encompassing perspective on the iconic individual who wears multiple hats in the industry, offering a glimpse into Streisand’s personal archives and her current projects through footage.
The movie will trace Streisand’s journey, beginning with her childhood in Brooklyn and moving through her initial success in New York nightclubs and her critically acclaimed role as Fanny Brice in the original Broadway musical “Funny Girl,” which was later transformed into the 1968 film “Funny Girl” starring Streisand. Following her Academy Award-winning performance in that film, Streisand went on to act in “Hello, Dolly!”, “The Owl and the Pussycat”, “What’s Up, Doc?”, “A Star Is Born”, and made her directorial debut with “Yentl“. Notably, “Yentl” was the first time a woman had written, directed, produced, and starred in a major feature film. In terms of music, Billboard reported in 2021 that Streisand is the only female recording artist to have her albums appear on the publication’s Top 20 list in every decade since the 1960s.

I’m overjoyed that Alex Gibney, the producer, and Frank Marshall, the director, have agreed to embark on this adventure with me.
Over the span of her lengthy profession, Streisand has received two Oscars, eight Grammys, four Emmys, eight Golden Globes, and a Tony Award (excluding lifetime achievement honors). In simpler terms, she’s won multiple awards in different categories throughout her career.
For years, discussions have revolved around creating the ultimate documentary about Barbra Streisand,” Gibney stated. “Following some fantastic discussions and thorough investigation, we are now proceeding with Frank Marshall at the helm. I am thrilled to be involved in making a film about Barbra, an iconic singer, talented actor, director, and political advocate who continues to inspire us. Oh, and by the way, she’s also an amazing storyteller with a great sense of humor!
The upcoming documentary will be a joint production between the Kennedy/Marshall Company and Jigsaw Productions owned by Gibney. The team responsible for producing this piece includes Gibney himself, Marshall, Aly Parker from the Kennedy/Marshall company, Michele Farinola known for her work in music documentaries, Tom Mackay who serves as president of premium content at Sony Music Entertainment, and Jay Landers, a record producer and songwriter with a history of collaboration with Streisand.
The movie will be distributed globally through Sony Music Vision, collaborating with Columbia Records. Specifically, Sony Music Vision will manage the worldwide sales, and since Columbia Records is a branch of Sony Music, it’s part of this process as well. Barbra Streisand has been associated with Columbia Records for a long time.
Streisand is set to follow in the footsteps of artists like Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, and Billie Eilish, who have recently been involved with music documentaries. This surge in music documentaries started when streaming platforms were looking to beef up their content offerings a few years back. The trend has resulted in both independently produced and star-produced titles.
