As a film enthusiast with a penchant for top-tier television, I am thrilled to see Bill Hader returning to HBO, the gold standard of premium cable networks. While it’s a bit disheartening that he won’t be starring in the new comedy series he’s co-writing with Duffy Boudreau, the prospect of their creative collaboration is enough to whet my appetite. The logline, “A woman in a small town has a big secret revealed,” while brief and ambiguous, is intriguing, especially considering the talent behind it.
Approximately a year and a bit since the final episode of “Barry” was broadcasted on HBO, Bill Hader is coming back to the premium cable network for a fresh comedy series. It’s challenging to envision anyone surpassing the Emmy-winning show, but if someone can manage it, it’s Hader and arguably the finest premium cable network available. Incidentally, the actor-writer will be teaming up with another “Barry” scriptwriter for an unnamed comedy script. However, it appears that Hader won’t be starring in this particular project.
Based on Variety’s report, Bill Hader is teaming up with his longtime friend Duffy Boudreau to write a new comedy pilot for HBO. Besides their collaboration on “Barry,” Boudreau has worked on shows like “Big Mouth” on Netflix and the animated series “Hit-Monkey” featuring Jason Sudeikis, available on Hulu. Details about the HBO project are limited at this point, but it’s known that the working title is “A woman in a small town has a big secret revealed.” Although the logline is brief and vague, the anticipated quality of the writing duo is what makes it intriguing. At present, the untitled comedy series pilot is being developed for HBO, but it hasn’t been picked up as a series yet, typically happening after the first episode is produced and presented to the network.
HBO Is Expanding its Comedy Library
The upcoming Barry reunion is not the only comedy series HBO is gearing up to make. I Think You Should Leave‘s Tim Robinson is developing a show called The Chair Company, which he will star in as well as write and executive produce alongside Zach Kanin (Detroiters, SNL). HBO has already ordered a pilot from Rachel Sennott to series, which is currently untitled (the actress promises she’ll come up with a name soon) but boasts a complete cast and crew. The logline teases a familiar sitcom formula but with a twist, “A codependent friend group reunites, navigating how the time apart, ambition, and new relationships have changed them.”
It’s uncertain whether Hader will appear in the forthcoming HBO series, but the award-winning actor and producer has been reducing his on-screen appearances since Barry ended. However, his next leading role is as a voice actor for The Cat in the Hat by Warner Bros., set to release in March 2026. In the meantime, HBO has been beefing up its comedy lineup with new projects. Besides the mentioned productions, The Franchise, inspired by real-life horror tales from the superhero film industry, is slated for release in the first week of October.
