As a long-time Toronto resident and avid music enthusiast, this news fills me with a sense of excitement that is hard to contain! Growing up here, I’ve seen our city grow from a modest cultural hub into a global powerhouse, thanks in no small part to hometown heroes like Drake and The Weeknd.
Live Nation Entertainment recently revealed their blueprint for constructing a brand-new, 50,000-capacity stadium situated in the northern part of Toronto, designed to welcome world-class musical performances.
The Rogers Stadium, which will rise on a former airplane runway, is scheduled to open in June 2025. This stadium will be situated on lands that were initially intended for a large film studio complex at the old Downsview Airport site. Live Nation has teamed up with Northcrest Developments following their decision to abandon plans for a film studio on a 370-acre site previously utilized by Downsview Airport.
The real estate company holds the possibility of resurrecting proposals for a future film studio construction. Instead of the initial location, the outdoor Rogers Stadium will be erected at the northern end of the runway, rather than where the film studio was envisioned.
In light of an extraordinary number of big-name artists touring currently, Live Nation Canada’s president, Erik Hoffman, shared during a press conference in Toronto on Thursday, we’ve created another venue where these artists can showcase their talents.
Hoffman contends that Toronto’s growing status as a significant location for prominent pop music artists and rock bands is partly attributed to local talents such as Drake and The Weekend. “This latest declaration perfectly illustrates Toronto’s position in the global arena,” he asserted.
1) Summer concerts will still be held at Rogers Centre, located in the city’s central district, by Live Nation. Meanwhile, Northcrest, the primary developer, acquired the old Downsview airport lands from Bombardier back in 2018. They also have plans for residential and shopping complexes on the property that lies north of downtown Toronto.
Rogers Communications, a significant player in Canadian media, will be entitled to name the upcoming concert venue. “We’re thrilled about the prospect of bolstering not only Toronto, but also Canada’s entertainment and cultural sectors, in collaboration with Live Nation, Northcrest Developments, and our government partners,” stated Tony Staffieri, CEO of Rogers Communications, at the press conference.
