Balatro Mobile is available now, bringing the deck-building roguelike to the perfect platform

  • Cult-classic deck-building roguelite Balatro is out now
  • If you’re an Apple Arcade subscriber it’s included in that too
  • Jimbo says download it now

As a seasoned card game enthusiast who’s spent countless hours shuffling decks and outsmarting opponents, let me tell you, Balatro Mobile has been a breath of fresh air! The unique blend of deck-building, solitaire, and poker elements has hooked me from the very first deal.

The mobile app, known as Balatro Mobile and crafted by LocalThunk, has been formally released on Google Play, the App Store, and Apple Arcade. This application is both straightforward and intricate in design.

The game Balatro, a blend of deck-building, solitaire, and poker elements, has gained a devoted following since its debut. Its unique attraction lies in the compelling mechanism that centers around constructing extraordinary multipliers and combinations by enhancing a traditional card deck using jokers, booster packs, tickets, and other items, with the ultimate goal of surpassing progressively challenging target scores.

After the hints dropped in March, it’s now officially released and can be found on (most) popular mobile platforms.

If you find yourself wondering, “This seems a bit unusual,” then your intuition is correct. It may not read as captivating initially, and what makes it challenging is encapsulating the fundamental mechanism. Essentially, it combines the adrenaline-pumping experience of navigating through scenarios in run-style games, with the familiarity of game pieces derived from a standard 52-card deck and poker hand scoring system.

Afterward, the situation becomes complicated, but in a way that you have command over. Essentially, it turns into advantages or power-ups. There’s a pile of jester cards that come into play as you draw from a deck, altering your score based on suits, numbers, positions, or other factors.

As a gamer, diving into this game feels surreal, magical even. Not only can I enhance my entire deck with upgrades, but I can also twist the rules with tarot cards or in-game purchases, transforming my standard fifty-two-card deck into something entirely different. It’s a strange, wondrous experience that leaves me hooked and struggling to tear myself away.

As I draw cards from my deck, it seems like every third one is a heart, with many others being diamonds or having special modifications. It feels like I’m scoring flushes almost every round, and each flush is worth an impressive 30 to 40 to even 50 times the normal score, thanks to the clown and the scorechart modifiers I picked up along the way. Quite a rush!

Anyway. Balatro is out now on mobile. It’s great if you love numbers, planning things, replanning things, failing for no reason, winning for no reason, and losing many, many hours of your day.
