As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for art and technology, I find Oscar Wang’s “Gathering” at Alila Shanghai to be nothing short of mesmerizing. This sculpture, nestled amidst the city’s hustle and bustle, is a breathtaking blend of tradition and modernity – much like trying to navigate the digital world while keeping a foot firmly planted in reality.
Oscar Wang recently revealed “Gathering,” his debut large-scale city sculpture, at the freshly opened Alila Shanghai – marking the brand’s inaugural resort retreat within Greater China.
Located in the lively Jing’an district, Wang’s sculpture is housed within the hotel’s grand atrium, positioned on the lobby floor. By skillfully blending materials, the sculpture assumes the shape of a tree, symbolizing a fusion of traditional Chinese wisdom and Alila’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Each element of this artwork pays tribute to and commemorates the five elements and five senses that serve as its primary sources of inspiration.
In the sculpture named “Gathering”, its central body and limbs are made from polished silver, while the leaves subtly suggest fire and earth through a combination of ceramic and steel. Inside this sculpture, there are programmed light sources that adjust their brightness and color, creating a rhythmic pattern reminiscent of breathing, as if the tree itself is alive.
In this rapidly moving, modern age filled with numerous distractions, Wang points out that our frenetic work and lifestyle often lead us astray from our authentic, peaceful selves. He aspires for his latest sculpture to serve as a reminder, encouraging viewers to reconnect with their most comfortable, natural state.
