As a gamer who grew up watching Christopher Reeve soar through the skies as Superman, I can confidently say that the casting of this legendary hero was nothing short of perfection. The alternate possibilities – from Neil Diamond to Caitlyn Jenner (then Bruce) and Arnold Schwarzenegger – would have undoubtedly resulted in a disaster of epic proportions. Thankfully, the casting team saw the potential in an unknown actor who’d recently starred alongside Katharine Hepburn on Broadway.

Bruce Jenner had the physical prowess, but his acting skills left room for improvement. Schwarzenegger pursued us relentlessly, boasting a physique reminiscent of the comic book character, albeit with an exaggerated Austrian accent, “Truth, justice, and the American way.” We eventually decided against casting a well-known Superman and instead opted for an unknown actor, surrounding him with established stars.
Let’s all concur that we managed to avoid some significant pitfalls. For instance, neither Neil Diamond nor Caitlyn Jenner (then Bruce) were actors, suggesting it wouldn’t be prudent for them to portray a character as iconic in pop culture as they had been for four decades at that time. Arnold Schwarzenegger had made some movie appearances by then, such as “Hercules in New York” and “Stay Hungry,” but Spengler’s point about his heavy Austrian accent being incongruous with the American icon of Superman is convincing. Similarly, I believe Robert Redford, who had already captivated audiences in films like “The Sting” and “Three Days of the Condor,” would have been ill-suited for the role.

Both Superman and its sequel Superman II (including both the original version and The Richard Donner Cut) were warmly received, but unfortunately, this wasn’t the case for Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, a film that Jon Cryer, who played Lenny Luthor, referred to as a “disaster.” However, Reeve’s enduring image as Superman remains unblemished, so let us remain grateful that he was chosen instead of other potential candidates.
