As a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast who has followed the franchise since its inception, I cannot help but feel a tinge of disappointment at the missed opportunity that could have been the Obi-Wan Kenobi trilogy. Having grown up watching Ewan McGregor bring the iconic Jedi Master to life in the prequel films, the thought of seeing him explore his journey in three epic installments was nothing short of exhilarating.
Despite some fans arguing that Obi-Wan Kenobi would have been more fitting as a movie instead of a TV series, it turns out one of the writers had intended it to be a three-part saga. The 2022 release on Disney+, titled Obi-Wan Kenobi, is a strong addition to the Star Wars franchise, with Ewan McGregor delivering an exceptional portrayal in the lead role and Hayden Christensen making a much-anticipated comeback as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.
Originally, Obi-Wan Kenobi was intended as a film focusing on the Jedi Master’s battles against the Imperial Army and Darth Vader. However, it was put on hold and eventually developed into a TV series. Writer Stuart Beattie envisioned it as a three-film series and tried to persuade Lucasfilm to bring this plan to life, but unfortunately, his efforts were unsuccessful.
During an interview with Star Wars Theory on YouTube, Beattie shared his initial plan for Lucasfilm to produce a trilogy of movies that would depict different stages in Kenobi’s life, including his growth and encounters with Darth Vader. To put it simply, he envisioned these films as showing Kenobi’s maturation process.
When Disney acquired control, I assumed they might create an Obi-Wan film, as it seemed to be a popular choice among fans. However, there was no news about it. Consequently, I began brainstorming my own concepts and presented them at Lucasfilm. It was this pitch that eventually sparked the project, given that they were occupied with Rogue One and Solo: A Star Wars Story at the time.
Initially, I never envisioned Beattie’s concept being green-lit as a television series by Disney. In fact, it was a stark contrast to my original plans. Yet, here we are, with him playing a pivotal role in the show’s writing process.
During the gathering, someone posed a question to me about whether it was a film or a series, and I clarified that it was indeed a movie, originally intended to be three movies for [Obi-Wan]. It wasn’t until a year later that they suggested we turn it into a show instead.
As a devoted Star Wars fan, I can’t help but express my disappointment over the cancellation of the trilogy that was planned to delve into the adventures of Darth Vader and Obi-Wan. The reason behind this is Disney’s choice not to produce any more spin-off films following the release of Solo, which leaves us fans yearning for a narrative that could have potentially revolutionized Star Wars, had it been executed skillfully. These two characters are undeniably among the most iconic in the franchise, and their untold stories were eagerly anticipated by many.
What Could the Obi-Wan Movie Trilogy Have Covered?
Although fans are eager for more Skywalker Saga content, a trilogy focusing on Obi-Wan’s exploits could be challenging, but director Stephen Beattie has a clear vision. In our discussion, Beattie also mentioned that Obi-Wan would guard and mentor Luke, helping him grow into the galaxy’s most powerful Jedi, eventually overthrowing Palpatine’s tyranny.
In my initial movie, a significant aspect of Obi-Wan’s voyage involves rekindling his bond with the Force.
Over time, Obi-Wan Kenobi would undergo a transformation, becoming known as Ben instead, as he severed his link with the Force. Beattie hinted that a significant portion of the initial movie would delve into Obi-Wan’s journey to uncover the secrets behind his lost abilities. Later on, Obi-Wan decided to temporarily abandon Luke so that he could grow independently without being intensely trained prematurely.
Despite the project not becoming a movie, we certainly produced an exceptional TV series that hasn’t had a follow-up yet. Therefore, if given the chance, wouldn’t you be interested in witnessing an Obi-Wan trilogy unfold on the silver screen?
