Former NBC News Anchor Brian Williams in Talks With Amazon to Lead Election Night Special

As a seasoned gamer with a knack for staying informed, I must admit that the news of Brian Williams potentially returning to the anchor desk at Amazon Prime Video has piqued my interest. It’s like seeing an old friend stepping into a new role, albeit in a somewhat unexpected setting.

It’s being discussed that Brian Williams, a former NBC News and MSNBC host, might reclaim his position behind the anchor desk… at an unexpected broadcasting platform instead.

Reports indicate that Amazon Prime Video is in negotiations with comedian and political commentator, Williams, for hosting an election night special. If discussions prove successful (note: it’s important to remember that negotiations are ongoing and a final deal might not be reached), the special would involve Williams and other contributors analyzing and discussing the election outcomes. The program will maintain a non-partisan stance.

For nearly three decades, I was a cherished figure at NBC, serving as an anchor for both NBC News and MSNBC. During that time, I proudly helmed the prime-time NBC Nightly News broadcast from 2004 to 2015. However, after it was uncovered that some of my reports contained embellishments and inaccuracies, specifically during coverage of Iraq and New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina’s devastation, I chose to step down from my position.

He would go on to lead the 11 p.m. hour on MSNBC, before leaving the company entirely in 2021.

It’s unexpectedly venturing into news territory for Prime Video, known primarily for its entertainment content such as “Fallout” and sports like the NFL and NBA. However, this one-off special doesn’t equate to a full-blown commitment to news, but it does represent an interesting exploration of that field. One insider noted that this special is viewed as a singular event rather than a sign of future intentions.

As a gamer, I find that news doesn’t hold its appeal for long, much like entertaining shows, and unlike sports, it rarely gathers a huge crowd (though election nights can be an exception).

Over the past few years, streaming platforms that belong to media corporations which generate news have incorporated news content into their offerings. For instance, Paramount+ and Peacock now feature CBS and NBC news programs respectively, while ABC News programming was added to Disney+ just this month (Hulu has had it for some time). Last year, CNN programming was included on Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max, although they have since reduced the number of U.S. shows from CNN that they broadcast.

Variety first reported the talks.
